As the saying goes “Thirumaalai (the prabandham) ariyaadhaar, Thirumaalaye (Perumalai) ariyaadhaar”, we all need to learn and understand Thirumaalai , sung by Thondaradipodi Azhwaar, to know more and more about Perumal/Emperumaan. In the first three hymns of this Divyaprabandham, Azhwaar enjoyed the experiences, graced by Emperumaan on him and in the subsequent eleven hymns, Azhwaar was preaching us his experiences with Paramathma. When people raised many objections, Azhwaar responded to them to follow Sri Rama, when he mentioned “silaiyinaal ilangai setra devane devan aavaan”; and asked them follow Sri Krishna, who is simple and easy to approach, as ‘katrinam meytha kazhalinai panimin‘; and finally to Aranganathan, by mentioning ‘uybavaruku uyyum vannam Thiruvarangam kaatinaan”. Azhwaar continued his preaching by mentioning the glories of Thiruvarangam in the next three hymns.
Since, people did not follow Azhwaar’s above preachings, he decided to leave them and started to sing about the great help graced by Periyaperumaal to him in the next ten hymns. We discussed the first of these hymns, the fifteenth paasuram, ‘Meyyerke Meyyanaagum‘. In that hymn, Azhwaar sang that Emperumaan does all the things for those who show truthful devotion to him; He also protects those who do things related to devotion which are not really truthful, but could be classified as truthful; He lets down those who are not even doing such false devotion as mentioned above. Azhwaar concluded that hymn by stating that Perumal uses His beauty to clarify all the doubts. In the next hymn, “soodhanaai kalvanaai“, Azhwaar mentioned that Azhwaar himself was a thief and a fraud, who got entangled with the beauty of the eyes of the other women and fell in deep pits. Azhwaar confirmed that Periyaperumal used His beauty to correct him and diverted all his love and affection towards Him.
In the next hymn, “Virumbi ninru“, Azhwaar stated that previously he did not use his hands to pray, mouth to say prayers or heart to devote himself to Emperumaan. Emperumaan showed His soft and sweet beauty to melt the hardened heart of Azhwaar and Azhwaar was so happy that his eyes were filled tears. Initially, Azhwaar was happy about the opportunity he got to have the dharsan of Thiruvarangan, who is alone and without any peer, ruling the entire kingdom and that happiness caused continuous tears from his eyes. With tears, he could not enjoy the dharsan continuously. So Azhwaar was worried and frustrated at himself in not making use of the opportunity offered to him and hence he called himself as a sinner in the eighteenth hymn, “ini thirai thivalai“.
In the nineteenth hymn, “Kuda thisai mudiyai vaithu” Azhwaar sang that Perumal created the four directions and kept the holy parts of His form (Thirumeni) in each direction, so that we can get abode by having dharsan of those holy form. Azhwaar continued that his mind and body started to melt after having the splendid dharsan of Periyaperumal and wondered how others were not affected; if they were using any medicine to sustain such a strong state, azhwaar asked them to give a small portion of that medicine to him.
For that, people responded to Azhwaar by asking him to come out of the devotion to Emperumaan. According to Azhwaar, those who know the glories of Emperumaan, would understand that Emperumaan is in Thiruvarangam only for themselves. Only those who are selfish and proud of themselves alone would get away from Periyaperumal and Azhwaar said that he would not do that. This is what he conveyed in the twentieth hymn, Paayuram Neer Arangam Thannul.
In the previous hymn, Azhwaar said that he could not leave Arangan after having His dharsan. Suggestions were made to Azhwaar that he could try limiting his time to enjoy the experience of the beauty of Arangan or he could stay at a corner and think about or offer prayers to Arangan, in stead of seeing or having a dharsan of Arangan so that he would not suffer. For these, Azhwaar advised his mind/heart that limiting the experience of enjoying the beauty of Arangan, would be like what he lost in the past in terms of having the Bhagawadh experience, due to his own level of confidence or faith. This was the summary of the previous hymn “Panivinaal manam athu ondri“.
Now let us go into the next hymn.
Pesitre pesal allaal perumai onru unaral aagaathu, aasatraar thangat allaal ariyal aavaanum allan, maasatraar manathu ulaanai vanangi naam iruppadhu allaal, pesathaan aavadhu undo, pedhai nenje nee solaai (Thirumaalai 22)
In the last hymn, Azhwaar when he mentioned “manathinaal ninaikalaame ?“, to mean that he confirmed that enjoying Periya Perumal’s beauty could not be contained within a time frame by the heart. When people suggested Azhwaar that he could keep speaking about the beauty of Periyaperumal using his mouth, rather than watching or seeing Him. Azhwaar questioned them back, as how to talk about something which could not be conceived by the heart fully. This is the gist of this hymn “pesitre pesal allaal’. According to Thaithriya Samhithai 7.5.3, first comes the heart (or mind) and then only the speech, as the mouth could only speak what the heart or mind thinks. In other words, what could not be conceived fully by the heart, could not be spoken by the mouth.
Azhwaar said to his heart that we could talk only what vedas and our acharyars had spoken and would not be able to speak anything new about the glories of the Emperumaan, who lives in the hearts of those who are faultless. For others, Emperumaan would not be visible or understood. There is no other go other than offering our prayers to Him according to what is told in Vedas and what is practised by our acharyaars. Azhwaar completed this hymn, by asking the heart whether we would be able to write a new hymn to speak His glories.
If Azhwaar’s heart could not fully conceive the matter related to Paramathmaa, there was a suggestion to him that he could speak it out like any other worldly matter. Azhwaar’s response was that all other worldly matter were limited and hence our mouth could speak it out completely, whereas the matter relating to Emperumaan was unlimited and hence our mouth could not finish talking about Him. Then people asked Azhwaar to stop talking. As mentioned earlier, Vishnu Dharmam says that those hearts which think about Vishnu alone are hearts and the mouths which speak about Vishnu alone are mouths. So Azhwaar said that we have to continue talking only what was told in Vedas and what others had spoken on Paramathma, keeping the Vedas as the guidance and he could not speak anything different or new. Manavaala Maa Munigal referred to such people who speak differently as fools in his Upadesa Rathna Maalai (71) like “munnor mozhindha murai thappaamal kettu, pinnornthu thaam adhanai pesaamal tham nenjil thonrinadhe“.
Following are some examples, on what Vedas told on Paramathmaa and what others told keeping Vedas as guidance.
It is a general practice to explain things which are not conceivable by the heart in this world, by using things that are visible and physcially present in this world. Since we have used some lowly examples to explain the supreme Paramathma, we can not conclude that we have understood the Paramathma fully.
Thythriya Upanishad – Anantha Valli (9.1) – says that those whose hearts come back with a message that it is impossible to understand, measure and express about the happiness of Paramathmaa, are actually the ones, who had understood the happiness of Paramathmaa and would not be afraid of anything. So we have to accept that we can not express completely about Paramathmaa, as the above are the words from those who knew Brahmam or Paramathmaa. Generally whatever that could not be explained by words, could be felt by heart. But here it is told that it is not even measurable by heart.
In Ramayana, Thara, wife of Vaali, said that even after seeing Sri Rama directly in front of her, He was beyond what she could think of. “thvam aprameyascha, thurasathascha, jeethendhriyascha, uthama dhaarmikascha, akshayya keerthischa, vichakshanascha, kshithikshamaavaan kshathajopamaaksha (4.24.31) glorifiying Rama as “‘You are immeasurable, unassailable, self- controlled, and best among the righteous. Your fame never diminishes. You have great sense of discrimination. You are known to possess forbearance like the mother earth. Your eyes are red-cornered (which is a sign of valour).”
Why we need to accept the words of a person, who knew Brahmam and when he said that it could not be expressed’? Whenever we use examples to express certain things, the example would be generally superior to the parable. But when we want to explain Emperumaan using examples, all such examples would be always lesser and lowly compared to Emperumaan. We have to keep it mind that we would not be able to express any one of His glories, or His beauty, or His wealth or His holy form. This can be understood from the word “onru” in the hymn, means one.
Based on the previous arguments, people asked Azhwaar, was it impossible for anyone to understand Paramathmaa. Azhwaar responded that those who take only Him as the route to reach Him would alone be able to understand Him fully and all others would not understand Him. This is what is being told in Bhagawadh Geetha (7.3), by Lord Krishna, that only one in many many thousands would understand Him fully.
The word “aasu” in this sentence and the word “maasu” in the next sentence mean the the same, namely, fault; however, Azhwaar had used them to convey two different types of faults. The first one, ‘aasu‘, is the pride, in the people’s mind, who would try to reach Emperumaan using all other means, like Activities, Knowledge and Devotion (Karma, Gnanam and Bakthi) other than using Him as the route. The second type of fault, “Maasu” is the one where people, after reaching or getting Him, asking for other things, such as worldly wealth etc., other than He Himself.
We would have heard about three types of Jeevathmaas, based on what they want from Emperumaan.
We should ask for and achieve only Him, which is the second in the above list. If we think that we should look for material wealth or the stage in between, like Kaivalyam, Azhwaar highlighted that as the other fault of our heart, namely, Maasu, in this hymn. So Azhwaar stated that those who reach Him, using Him as the route and after reaching Him, asking Him as their only desire, by rejecting Kaivalyam and material wealth (Aiswaryam), were called as “maasu atraar” ( devoid of maasu) here.
Azhwaar stresses clearly that it is in the hearts of His devotees, where Emperumaan or Paramathmaa would reside by calling Him as “Manathu Ullaanai’. Azhwaar also defined these devotees as those who gave up the two types of prides, who left all other types of routes other than Him, as the means to attain Him and also who did not ask for anything else other than He Himself, after attaining Him. By doing these, they surrendered all the responsibility to Him so that their worldly life could be ended to enjoy Him fully in Paramapadham. These people are called as Maasu Atraar and Aasu Atraar by Azhwaar. The commentator also continued that Emperumaan would feel uncomfortable and feel as though He would be in the mid of a wild forest fire or like a fish that was taken out of water, if He is to be away from the hearts of such devotees or if He has to stay in the hearts of other jeevathmaas.
So Emperumaan is in all the divyadesams in order identify those devotees without these two prides (aasu atraar and maasu atraar) and to reside eternally in their hearts.
We have seen earlier that every Azhwaar has their own specialty and Thirumazhisai Azhwaar is known for his attachment towards Antharyaami, one of the five states of Paramathmaa. What he sang in his Thiruchandhavirutham hymns 64 and 65 are reffered by the commentator as reference to Mananth ullaanai.
There are many other places where almost all Azhwaars’ have mentioned that He is in the heart of Azhwaars or such devotees. We could not get all the hymns list, but We can see some of the hymns on Mannathu Ullaanai here.
Thondaradipodi Azhwaar says that after we understand that He would not leave the minds/hearts of His devotees, the objective of the devotees became much simpler, that is to enjoy Him. The word “vanangi” means offering prayers and that includes
Azhwaar confirms that when we think of His glories we can never speak or sing about His glories completely.
Azhwaar was telling his heart that it would be foolish on its part to assume that it would be able to speak the glories of Emperumaan fully or limit the discussions on those, which are of supreme most value and content. Azhwaar confirmed that the heart or mind would be able to complete the discussions only if it was thinking or talking about lowly worldly things. With these, Azhwaar completed this hymn.
Let us meet again on the next hymn, thanks

But the commentator explains that Azhwaar was not mentioning the natural beauty of Emperumaan, but how the various holy parts of His form were with the fresh enhanced beauty ,after He came inside Azhwaar.

As the saying goes ”Thirumaalai (the prabandham) ariyaadhaar, Thirumaalaye (Emperumaanai) ariyaadhaar”, we all need to learn and understand Thirumaalai , sung by Thondaradipodi Azhwaar, to know more and more about Emperumaan. In the first three hymns of this Divyaprabandham, Azhwaar enjoyed the experiences, graced by Emperumaan on him and in the subsequent eleven hymns, Azhwaar was preaching his experiences with Paramathma. When people raised many objections, Azhwaar responded to them to follow Sri Rama, when he mentioned “silaiyinaal ilangai setra devane devan aavaan”; and asked them to follow Sri Krishna, who is simple and easy to approach, by ‘katrinam meytha kazhalinai panimin‘; and finally to Aranganathan, by ‘uybavaruku uyyum vannam Thiruvarangam kaatinaan”. Azhwaar continued his preaching by mentioning the glories of Thiruvarangam.
In spite of above, people did not follow Azhwaar’s preaching, he decided to leave them and started to sing about the great help graced by Periyaperumal to him in the next ten hymns (15-24). We discussed the first of these hymns, the fifteenth paasuram, ‘Meyyerke Meyyanaagum‘ where Azhwaar sang that Emperumaan does all the things for those who show truthful devotion to him; He also protects those who do things related to devotion which are not wholly truthful, but could be classified as truthful; He lets down those who are not even doing such false devotion as mentioned above. Azhwaar concluded that hymn that Emperumaan uses His beauty to clarify all the doubts. In the next hymn, “soodhanaai kalvanaai“, Azhwaar mentioned that he himself was a thief and a fraud, who got entangled with the beauty of the eyes of the other women and fell in deep pits. Azhwaar asserted that Periyaperumal used His beauty to correct him and diverted all his love and affection towards Him.
In the next hymn, “Virumbi ninru“, Azhwaar sang that previously he did not use his hands to pray, mouth to say prayers or heart to devote himself to Emperumaan. Emperumaan used His tender and sweet beauty to melt the hardened heart of Azhwaar and Azhwaar was so happy that his eyes were filled with tears. Initially, Azhwaar was happy about the opportunity of having the dharsan of Thiruvarangan, who is all alone, without any peer and ruling the entire kingdom but that happiness caused continuous tears from his eyes. With tears, he could not enjoy the dharsan continuously. So Azhwaar was worried and frustrated at himself in not making use of the opportunity, hence called himself a sinner in the eighteenth hymn, “ini thirai thivalai“.
In the nineteenth hymn, “Kuda thisai mudiyai vaithu“ Azhwaar sang that Emperumaan created the four directions and kept the holy parts of His form (thirumeni) in each direction, so that we can get abode by having dharsan of those holy form. Azhwaar continued that his mind and body started to melt after the splendid dharsan of Periyaperumal and wondered how others were not affected; if they were taking any potion to sustain such a strong state, Azhwaar asked them to give him a small portion of that medicine.
For that, people asked Azhwaar to come out of the devotion to Emperumaan. People who know the glories of Emperumaan, would understand that Emperumaan is in Thiruvarangam only for themselves. But people who are selfish and proud of themselves would move away from Periyaperumal and Azhwaar said that he would be one among them. This is what he conveyed in the twentieth hymn, Paayuram Neer Arangam Thannul.
Now let us go into the next hymn.
Panivinaal manam adhu onri, pavala vaai Aranganaarku, thunivinaal vaazha maataa, thollai nenje nee sollaai, aniyinaar semponaayaa aruvarai anaiya koyil, maniyanaar kidandhavaatrai, manathinaal ninaikalaame (Thirumaalai 21)
In the last hymn, Azhwaar said that he could not move away, after having the dharsan of Arangan. Two things happened. One is that his heart told Azhwaar that he should create a boundary and and set a limit to himself for the enjoyment of the beauty of Arangan. Secondly, the people who heard Azhwaar’s words, “karumbinai kandu kondu” (17), “aravanai thuyiluma kandu” (19), concluded that Azhwaar was distressed and did not know what to do (en seygen (18) and (19)), because he looked at Arangan with his eyes. They suggested that Azhwaar could sit in a corner and meditate about Arangan, through his heart, rather than looking through his eyes. Both these made Azhwaar to come to a conclusion that limiting the dharsan of Arangan was like the experience that he missed for a long time in the past, because of not having the courage; here Azhwaar referred, the complete trust (maha visvaasam) as courage.
Azhwaar in this hymn, was questioning his heart, how it would be possible to limit the enjoyment of Arangan who with coral like lips, reclining like a blue gemstone, in the temple that was like mountain Meru, made out of reddish gold. Azhwaar told his heart that it missed the opportunity to have the knowledge on Paramathma for a long time, because it did not have the humility, focus and courage. Azhwaar’s conclusion was that the experience of limiting the enjoyment of Arangan would end up like the knowledge that was missed in the past.
Azhwaar mentioning that his heart should commit and have the courage to worship Thiruvarangan (Periyaperumal) and move away from all other worldly matters, and the start of that commitment was stressed here by Azhwaar. Azhwar said ‘adhu‘ in “manam adhu onri” instead of “manam onri”, to refer to the thinking, the function of mind, rather than the mind itself. In Thiruvaaimozhi (4.3.1), Swami Nammazhwaar meant similar thing, when he used the word “nenjame” to refer the mind rather than the heart, in the phrase “poosum saandhu en nenjame“.
Nammazhwaar stressed the importance of that thought process, as “Thozha karudhuvadhe thunivadhu soodhe” in Thiruvaaimozhi (2.10.9) as the determination in our mind to reach Thirumaliruncholai as the first thing, to offer our prayers and getting abode successfully.
If we submit ourselves to anyone other than Paramaathmaa, there is no assurance that they would show any mercy. Even if they show mercy, we do not know whether it would result in any benefit. But if we show our humbleness to Periyaperumal, the amount of kindness and compassion shown by Him is boundless. To get such kindness, anjali to Emperumaan is enough, as seen from what is said below.
Azhwaar states that if Emperumaan finds someone who has started this involvement, His coral like reddish holy lips, utters consoling words so that the person would not feel that he lost this opportunity for such a long time. Emperumaan does not want to be too far away and wants to be nearer to the person who started this involvement and started thinking about Emperumaan and hence He is in Srirangam.
According to Azhwar, what is said earlier as humility and what is being said now as courage, are not initiated by the Jeevathmaas. Only Arangan’s beauty has initiated such courage and humility through which the Jeevathmas experience an excellent life.
According to Azhwaar, as we did not have the courage, we did not try the experience. So Azhwaar was asking for such courage in this hymn. Lord Krishna in Shanthi Parvam, Mahabharatham (334.47), said that those who were not sure in their mind would never reach Paramathmaa. In Ramayanam, Janaka Maharaja, father of Sita, was very clear than his achaaryar Veda Vyasa, that determination or courage was the only unfailing method to reach Paramapadham.
For our better understanding, we can take the words like courage and determination, that are mentioned here are equivalent to undaunted loyalty to Him. (Maha Visvassam)
Azhwaar was mentioning to his heart that, since there was no determination or maha visvasam it missed all these wonderful experiences with Emperumaan in the past.
Here Azhwaar was again mentioning to his heart which had mindlessly lost the experience of enjoying Emperumaan, that it was stupid if his mind to think that it could measure the experience of Emperuman so that it could completely finish that experience at some time. (and such an act would be equivalent to the losses he had suffered due to the missing His experiences in the past.)
Azhwaar stated that the huge Thiruvarangam temple was very beautiful that looked like the Mountain Meru made up of red hued gold. So this temple was like an ornament to this world and hence called it Aniyinaar. Similarly as a mountain is stable and a strong base to the whole world, so is Thiruvarangam temple. Hence Azhwaar suitably mentioned ‘aruvarai anaiya’.
Periyaperumal, in the reclining posture in the centre of Srirangam temple, is like a precious blue gemstone pressed on such a Meru Mountain according to Azhwaar.
Azhwaar is asking his heart, whether it would be possible to limit the experience of enjoyment of the beauty of Periyaperumal. He further told his heart that it might be possible to measure the experience of his glories and His playful activities too. But, to Azhwaar, it is impossible to measure or limit the experience of His beauty. The function of the mind or heart is to think and the thinking can not be carried out by any other part of our body. In the same way it is impossible for the mind or heart to measure or limit the experience of His beauty.
Let us catch up again on the next hymn. Thanks

As the saying goes ” Thirumaalai (the prabandham) ariyaadhaar, Thirumaalaye (Emperumaanai) ariyaadhaar”, we all need to learn and understand Thirumaalai , sung by Thondaradipodi Azhwaar, to know more and more about Emperumaan. In the first three hymns of this Divyaprabandham, Azhwaar enjoyed the experiences, graced by Emperumaan on him and in the subsequent eleven hymns, Azhwaar was preaching us his experiences with Paramathma. When people raised many objections, Azhwaar responded to them to follow Sri Rama, when he mentioned “silaiyinaal ilangai setra devane devan aavaan”; and asked them follow Sri Krishna, who is simple and easy to approach, by ‘katrinam meytha kazhalinai panimin‘; and finally to Aranganathan, by ‘uybavaruku uyyum vannam Thiruvarangam kaatinaan”. Azhwaar continued his preaching by mentioning the glories of Thiruvarangam in the next three hymns.
As people did not follow Azhwaar’s preaching, he decided to leave them and started to sing about the great help graced by Periyaperumal to him in the next ten hymns. We discussed the first of these hymns, in the fifteenth paasuram, ‘Meyyarke Meyyanaagum‘, where Azhwaar stated that Emperumaan does everything for those who show truthful devotion to him; He also protects those who do things related to devotion which are not really truthful, but could be named truthful; He lets down those who are not even showing such false devotion as mentioned above. Azhwaar concluded that Perumal uses His beauty to clarify all the doubts.
In the next hymn, “soodhanaai kalvanaai“, Azhwaar mentioned that he himself was a thief and a fraud, who got entangled with the beauty of the eyes of the other women and fell in deep pits. Azhwaar confirmed that Periyaperumal used His beauty to correct him and diverted all his love and affection towards Him.
In the next hymn, “Virumbi ninru“, Azhwaar sang that previously he did not use his hands to pray, mouth to say the prayers or heart to devote himself to Emperumaan. Em[erumaan used His soft and sweet beauty to mend the iron like heart of Azhwaar and Azhwaar was very happy that his eyes were filled with happiness. Initially, Azhwaar was happy about the opportunity he got to have the dharsan of Thiruvarangan, Who is all alone and without any peer, ruling the entire kingdom and that happiness caused him to melt and continuous tears from his eyes started to pour. With tears, he could not enjoy the dharsan continuously. So Azhwaar was worried and frustrated at himself in not making use of the opportunity offered to him and hence he called himself as a sinner in the eighteenth hymn, “ini thirai thivalai“.
As Azhwaar felt that his body also started to melt after having the splendid dharsan of Periyaperumal, he wondered how others were unaffected; Azhwaar asked them to give a small portion of the medicine, if they were taking any medicine to sustain such a strong state. In this nineteenth hymn, “Kuda thisai mudiyai vaithu“, Azhwaar sang that Emperumaan created the four directions and kept the holy parts of His form (thirumeni) in each direction, so that we can get abode by having dharsan of those holy form. .
Now let us go into the next hymn.
Payum neer Arangam thannul paambanai palli konda, Maayanaar Thirunanmaarvum, maragadha uruvum thollum, thooya thaamarai kanngallum, thuvaridhazh Pavala vaayum, aayaseer mudiyum, thesum, adiyarorku agalalaame. (Thirumaalai 20)
In the last hymn, Azhwaar asked for the medicine that kept others from not getting melted unlike Azhwaar. Others responded that Azhwaar should not get involved in Bhagawath matters and come out of it like themselves. Azhwaar said that people who have the knowledge that Periyaperumal in Srirangam is only for those people, like azhwaar himself, who would not come out of Bhagawath activities; and only people who were proud and selfish could ignore bhagawath activities and would move out of Periyaperumal and Azhwaar would not be like them. This is the summary of twentieth hymn.
In this hymn, Azhwaar is trying to describe the beauty of Periyaperumal. Srirangam is surrounded by the river Cauvery and Arangan, who does amazing things, takes a reclining position on the five-headed snake, Anathazhwaan. In this hymn, Azhwaar explains the beauty of Lord Aranganathan, individually and collectively as His chest adorned always ever by Sridevi Naachiyar, His glistening form in the colour of emerald ; His shoulders; His eyes, compared to pure lotus flowers; reddish lips; superior locks of hair; and overall brightness of His form. Azhwaar concludes this hymn, that all these beauties are all for the devotees and would they miss such a divine dharsan.
From this hymn, we can understand the beauty of Periyaperumal and also the Azhwaar’s attachment on His form.
The first version is, that Srirangam is a place, that is conducive to water flowing in naturally, unlike in a dam where we need to pump/store in the water . This also represents all other materials which are as clear as water, that purify or cleanse. All such materials confluence at Thiruvarangam. The other explanation for ‘Payum Neer Arangam‘ is, that Srirangam, the temple town was the place where all the eleven Azhwaars and all Achaaryars came to. Another place where water is compared to a virtuous person is from Valmiki Ramayanam. “O Bharadhwaja, behold the beautiful and pleasant waters of this river, that is as clear and pure as the mind of a virtuous man. (Valmiki Ramayanam, Balakaantam, 1.2.5).
Azhwaar is talking about the wonders of Periyaperumal and in that context, he brings out the fact that the wonders of Periyaperumal are not only in the books, but also it is on display, through His individual and overall Beauty of His form (Thirumeni), and the splendor all around. Here the commentator is recollecting “than thaalum tholum mudigalum samanilladha pala parappi” (Thiruvaaimozhi 8.10.8) to highlight the beauty of each and every part of His Holy Body (Thirumeni) in the reclining position. Some more hymns from Azhwaars, where Periyaperumal’s reclining position is explained using “than thaalum tholum mudigalum samanilladha pala parappi” (Thiruvaaimozhi 8.10.8) is given here for your reading pleasure.
Since Emperumaan is having a form that is more delicate than a flower, He is reclining on Ananthaazhwaan the multi headed serpant, so that the milky ocean water does not abrase Him. Here the commentator is quoting Periyazhwaar’s Thirumozhi (5.1.7) as “vellai vellathin mel oru paambai methaiyaaga virithu adhan mele kalla nithirai kolkinra“, meaning that the Lord is reclining and in pretented sleep on a serpent-bed in the milky ocean.
The words “palli konda” can be combined as “paambanai palli konda” and also “pallikonda maayanaar”, as both convey beautiful meaning. The word “Maayam” is used as “wonder”. Periyaperumal even when He is in reclining posture, does wonders. An example being, when Periyaperumal wishing to witness and hear the discourse of Nampillai (one of our Achaaryars) got up and talked to Thiruvilakkupichan.
Another explanation given is that His astonishing beauty, even in reclining position. Sita happily recollected the beauty of Rama in the reclining position in Yudha Kaantam of Ramayanam (38.25). (sa mayaa bhoditah sukha suptah parantapah) When Sita Piraati was disturbed by Kakasuran, Rama, handsome and capable of tormenting His enemies on a reclining position on Sita had to be woken up. Periyaperumal now in Srirangam was worshipped by Sri Rama, when He was in Ayodhya. No wonder, why Thondaradipodi Azhwaar was very fascinated by the reclining Aranaganathan. In the same way Aandal, woke up Sri Krishna, as the thaniyan says “Neela thunga sthana giri thadi supthamuthbodhya Krishnam“.
Thondaradipodi Azhwaar continued to state that people might leave Emperumaan in standing or sitting postures; but it is not possible to leave Him, when He is in reclining posture. Namazhwaar’s Thiruvaaimozhi (5.8.1) said “Yeraar kolam thigazha kidandhaai kanden emaane” and Kulasekara Azhwaar’s Perumal Thirumozhi (7.2), said “aanaiyil kidantha kidakai kandida pertrillen“, meaning that the beauty of His reclining posture is like a an elephant sleeping.
Thondaradipodi azhwaar wondered that he was running away from Paramathmaa’s extended hands, into the worldly life and Periyaperumal brought him back and this act of Periyaperumal is making him say Periyaperumal as “the Maayanaar“( who does wonders) according to Azhwaar.
We may also recollect “aravu in anai misai meya maayanaar” by Thirupaanazhwaar in his Amalanathipiraan (7).
The Holy chest of Emperuman is unique, and special because, that it is the place where Piraati ever resides and would not want to leave. Namazhwaar’s Thiruvaaimozhi (6.10.10), ‘agalagillen iraiyum enru” glorifies the above. Our achaaryar, Parasara Bhattar in his Sri Guna Ratna Kosam (4) established that Upanishads identify and claim that Emperuman is Paramathmaa, as there are marks of sempanjukuzhambu (soft reddish paste, which ladies use to enhance their beauty, in olden days) and the garlands of Piratti on the holy chest of Emperuman.
The holy radiant chest of Emperuman, Emperuman Himself and Piratti are combined together in Namazhwaar’s Thiruvaaimozhi (10.6.9), “Thigazhginra Thiru Maarbil Thirumangai thannodum thigazhginra Thirumaalaar”, that all of them together add beauty to each other and it is impossible to explain which is adding beauty to which.
Here Periyaperumal’s glowing emerald like form is compared to the released gushing water, by the commentator and it is stated that both, give pleasure and cooling effect to the eyes that see such a treat. We also recall “pachai maa malai pol meni“, Thirumaalai 2, by same Azhwaar. The prefixes Thiru (Mahalakshmi) and Nan (good) were added to the holy chest and maragadha (glowing emerald) was added to His holy form to enhance the specilaity of His form and Chest. But Azhwaar says that there is no such need to add any prefix to His shoulders, as they are naturally beautiful and strong. Also the commentator adds that these shoulders are like a float in a flood.
The direct meaning is that His holy eyes are like a pure lotus flower. The prefix ‘thooya’, meaning ‘pure’ is added as these eyes purify those who are all blessed by Them (His eyes). His holy eyes are impartial, whether it is His Piratti (Mahalakshmi) or the asuras like Hiranyan and bless them uniformly. His vision is pure as He views all without attaching any specific reason . His desire is to bless all through His holy eyes, without any bias.
Bhagawadh Geetha (5.29) says that, Emperumaan (Paramathma) is a friend to everyone, without any difference between enemies and friends. Another reference used here is Jithanthe Sthothram (1.2), where the holy feet of Mahavishnu is quoted as the source for surrender, equally for those who are devotees of Vishnu as well as those are atheists. In other words His relationship is same for all. The commentator queried why someone like asuras get unfavourable results when His vision is same for both good and bad. The commentator confirmed that it is not because of His vision, but because of the shortcomings or dhoshams of the Asuras. This is similar to, how a cool breeze, which gives pleasure to all, makes the lotus dry up.
When Azhwaar compared the flawless lotus flower to the holy eyes of Emperuman (Periyaperumal), it is only for the coolness, aroma and superior status; the flower can never be compared to compassion and mercy flowing from Emperuman’s eyes,
Azhwaar stated that Emperumaan has reddish holy lips and whitish dental array. But later changed his mind and called the dental array is reddish like coral and it is because of the reflection of the holy lips. We can also recall that we should retain satva habits (the colour of satvam is white) within ourselves like dental array and push out rajo habits (the colour of rajo is red) like the lips. Paramathma is all alone, without the support of anything, speaking to none, in a superior most level. From such a sublime state, He comes down and speaks kind words to those who approach Him. This is another explanation for His holy reddish mouth. Similarly, many are scared to approach Him, due to their own shortcomings. He gives such devotees a pleasing smile and assures them that they do no need to be scared. This is another explanation given for the reddish holy mouth, when Azhwaar called it as pavala vaai.
The word Aaya represents that it is always beautiful and ready that informs us that His hair style is beautiful and always in readiness to reach the devotees. Aayam means gold in Tamil the last character is reduced and combined with the next word, namely, Aaya seer, meaning that His locks of hair is like made up of gold. The word Seer reflects the wealthiness.
Thesu is supposed to be Thejas, meaning brightness, brilliance or illumination. Emperuman’s total form is illuminating with brightness and brilliance from each and every part mentioned earlier. Thirunanmaarbu, Maragadha Uru, Thooya Thaamarai Kanngal, Thurvar Idhazh, Pavala Vaai, and Aaya Seer Mudi are all expressions related to the beauty of the individual parts of His Form, whereas this word “Thejas” refers to the whole form, called as ‘samudhaaya sobhai”, and the other one is called ” Avayava sobhai”.
Some might question why Maragatha Uru is not classified under samuthaaya sovai, as uruvu may refer to the whole body. The commentator explained this as only avayava sovai, as not all parts of Emperumaan are green in colour like His teeth, His inside palm.
Avayava sobhai is referred to as Soundharyam and samudhaya sobhai is referred to Lavanyam. Among the divyadesams, Nagaipattinam Soundararaja Perumal is admired for Soundharyam and Thirukurungudi Nambi is admired for Lavanyam.
Azhwaar explained the individual and total beauty of Periyaperumal. He continued that for those who have the knowledge of Paramathmaa would not be able to stop enjoying the beauty of Periyaperumal and would not leave the place. Only those who are selfish and proud about themselves (Ahankaaram and Mamakaaram) would be able to leave the place. The last word ‘aame‘ seemed to be an acceptance from those around Azhwaar and with that Azhwaar concludes this hymn. Who would not like to enjoy the beauty of Periyaperumal or Emperumaan.
Let us catch up again on the next hymn.
When Namazhwaar referred to Emperumaan reclining on a tiny banyan leaf, he said “aalam perilai annavam seyyum ammaane” (Thiruvaaimozhi 8.3.4). The commentator asked should Emperumaan lie in a small place like the leaf, wherein He could have moved to a more spacious place as “than thaalum tholum mudigalum samaniladha pala parappi“.
Namazhwaar in Thiruvaaimozhi (4.1.6) advised people who desired to have a sustained superior life, to reach out to Emperumaan, reclining on the milky ocean (Thirupaarkadal), “nirkuril aazhndhaar kadal palli annal adiyavar aamin“. Here the commentator uses “than thaalum tholum mudigalum samanilladha pala parappi” to explain his reclining state on Thiruparkadal.
In Thiruvaaimozhi (3.10.2), Namazhwaar said “kuraivil thadankadal kol aravu yeri than kolachenthaamaraikan, uraibavan pol oru yogu punarntha oli mani vannan kannan”. The commentator uses ‘than thaalum tholum mudigalum samanilladha pala parappi” to explain that Emperuman is on Thiruvananthazhwaan in Thirupaarkadal with ample space, without any restriction.
Thirumazhisaiazhwaar in the 3rd hymn of Naanmugan Thiruvandhaadhi, sang, “Paalil kidandhadhuvum, Pandaragam meyadhuvum, aalil thuyindradhuvum, aararivaar “, meaning that He is in reclining state in Thirupaarkadal, is in Thiruvarangam and is on the banyan leaf and graces from all these places. Here also, the commentator uses than thaalum tholum mudigalum samanilladha pala parappi” to highlight that Emperuman capable of having enough space in each of the above settings.
Poigai Azhwaar in his second hymn of Mudhal Thiruvandhaadhi, sang “anru udaithu adaithu kann padutha aazhi” to express all the glorious and astonishing activities of Emperuman like building the Sethu across the ocean as Rama, wrecking the same when returning and reclining on the same ocean. Here the commentator uses than thaalum tholum mudigalum samanilladha pala parappi to indicate that His snake bed is spacious. Also Periyazhwaar’s “vella vellathin mel oru paambai methaiyaaga virithu adhan mel kalla nithirai kolkinra” (Periyazhwaar Thirumozhi 5.1.7) is quoted here.

This week, 26 Nov 2020, was Kaisika Ekadasi and the next day, 27th Nov, was Kaisika Dwadasi. Let us offer our prayers to Varahan and get His blessings
A Paksham is a fifteen days period starting from either full moon or new moon. The eleventh day in each of these Paksham is the Ekadasi, meaning eleven in Sanskrit, that is the eleventh day of the waxing(Sukla Paksham) and waning(Krishna Paksham) phase of the moon. It is an important fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and by following the Ekadasi vow, people are enable to get moksham/abode.
Sage Vyasa said that the merciful Supreme Lord Vishmu, suddenly manifested from His own form the deity of the lunar day Ekadasi after seeing the pains, the sinful souls were undergoing in the hell. Afterwards, those sinful entities began to follow the vow of Ekadasi and were then elevated quickly to the abode of Vaikuntha. Therefore the lunar day of Ekadasi is the selfsame form of the Supreme Lord, Vishnu, and the Supersoul (Antharyaami) within the heart of the living entities.
There is no Mantra that is equivalent to Gayathri Mantra; no God equivalent to a mother; no water equivalent to the holy water of Ganges; no vow equivalent to the Ekadasi Vow (Vratham). This is how Ekadasi Vratham is highlighted in Agni Purana. Any single droplet of water that touches the holy feet of Emperumaan (Paramathmaa or Perumal) is equivalent to the water from Ganges; The dharsan of the holy feet of Emperumaan is more divine than the dharsan of Vaikuntham; Lord Krishna says that Ekadasi Vratham is equivalent to all of the above activities. The great feature of Ekadasi Vratham is that it can be followed by everyone without any discrimination as, men, women, rich, poor, higher or lower caste etc.
Kaisika is the name of a Ragam or Tune. In Karnatic classical music, it is Bhairavi Ragam. Kaisika Ekadasi is observed in the Tamil Month of Kaarthigai on the Ekadasi day in Sukla Paksham. The tamil month Karthigai is approximately from 15th Nov to 15th Dec. The Kaisika Ekadasi is well glorified with the story of Nampaaduvaan, a great Vishnu devotee, in the Kaisika Puranam which is part of the Varaha Puranam.
Vijaya Chokanathar one of the kings came to Srirangam to have the dharsan on Ranaganatha on a Kaisika Ekadasi day and he could not have the dharsan, as the function was completed before he could arrive at the temple. The king was sad, but decided to stay in Thiruvarangam for the next one year to have the dharsan on the next Kaisika Ekadasi day. In recognition of his devotion and the services rendered by him, the statues of himself and his family are still kept in the temple on the second prahaaram ( circumvent ).
In Vishnu Sahasra naamam, Bhoogharbha (72), means that Vishnu protects His consort Bhoomadevi Thayar like how one would protect a pregnancy; Govinda (543) means that Vishnu has protected Bhoomadevi Thayar and got Her back. These two are particularly relevant to Kaisika Puranam, whereas the holy names (Thirunamams) 539 to 543 are all pertaining to Varaha incarnation.
When Brahma wanted to create the human beings in this world, a demon by name Hiranyakshakan, stealthily kept the Earth under the sea. Brahma prayed to Mahavishnu to help recover the earth from under the sea. Mahavishnu took Varaha incarnation to fulfil the desire of Brahma. Vishnu, as Varaha Perumal, fought with the evil Hiranyakshakan, killed him, brought the earth from the sea and established dharma.
As Bhoomadevi was still shivering with fear, Varaha Perumal placed Her on His lap to quell Her anxieties. She asked Perumal, on our behalf, on how the jeevathamaas, all Her children, would survive and reach Mokshham. Perumal, with abundant love towards us, told “shower flowers on Him with the hands, given by Him, praise Him by singing His songs through the mouth, given by Him and keep thinking about Him, with the Mind given by Him“. Later when Bhoomadevi took the form of Aandal, she recalled and reinstated this in Thirupaavai (5), in Divya Prabhandham.
In the same way, Varaha Perumal told that Namasankeerthanam, that is reciting His holy names, would be another way to reach Him. Further if the Namasankeerthanam is done in Kaisika ragam and sung in front of Him, in a temple on a special day like Kaisika Ekadasi and/or Dwadasi, those who hear the same would also get the benefit of reaching Mukthi or abode. Varaha Perumal explained the history of Nampaaduvaan to Bhoomadevi Thayaar, in a chapter called Kaisika Mahathmiyam, within Varaha Puranam.
Varaha Perumal hailed as
There is also a saying that Varaha Perumal has given the preachings of Kaisika Mahathmiyam on a Kaisika Ekadasi day, but we have to look for more details before making such statement.
The part in Varaha Puranam, where Varaha Perumal happily explaining the devotion of Nampaaduvaan to Bhoomi Piraati is called Kaisika Mahathmiyam. Kaisika Mahathimiyam is the original name, but later it is known as Kaisika Puranam. Kaisika (Ekadasi) Puranam is the narration of the deep devotion of Nampaaduvaan, born in Paanar caste, had for Nambi, the main deity in Thirukurungudi.
Parasara Bhattar, one of our acharyars, is considered and hailed as the child of Periya Perumal and Periya Piraati, raised and lullabied by Them. He lived around 900 years back, and took over the leadership of our tradition after Swami Ramanujar and Embar. Kaisika Mahathmiyam, (48th Chapter of Varaha Puranam), is described in 92 hymns (slokams) in Sanskrit and Bhattar had translated them into Tamil as Kaisika Purana Urai. On one Kaisika Ekadasi / Dwadasi Day, he recited the Kaisika Mahathmiyam in front of Periyaperumal. Periyaperumal, was happy and pleased, accorded the appreciation and honour to Bhattar from the temple, called Brahmma Ratha Yathirai, as he was driven home in the temple chariot. This tradition is still continued even today to the heirs of Bhattar.
The significance of Kaisika Ekadasi, arising out of Kaisikapuranam, was an event narrated by Sri Varaha Perumal to Bhoodevi. This Kaisika Puranam, emphasizing the importance of Namasamkeerthanam, happened in Thirukurungudi, near Tirunelveli. Varaha Perumal, who took a very huge and fearful form, shrunk Himself into a smaller size in this place and hence this town became Kurunudi. We can recall the hymn of Nammazhwaar from Thiruvirutham (45), “Perum Kezhalaar tham perum kann malar pundareegam nam mel orunge pirazha vaithaar”.
In this holy town, Thirukurungudi, Empermaan in different postures gives dharsan as Ninra Nambi, Kidandha Nambi, Irundha Nambi, Poorna Nambi and Malaimel Nambi.
As Thirukurungudi Nambi Himself was born as Swami Namazhwaar there is no separate sanctum for Nammazhwaar in this temple. It is also told that this temple was constructed by Thirumangai Azhwaar and during the days of Ramayana, Rama and Lakshmana stayed here along with their army of monkeys towards preparation of war with Ravana. Thirumangai Azhwaar, who was born in Thiruvali Thirunagari, visited many divyadesams (holy vishnu temples) and sang more than thousand two hundred and fifty (1253) hymns on the deities of those temples, reached Paramapadham from here.
In Varaha Puranam, Paaduvaan was the name used. Later, Parasara Bhattar gave the name ‘Nampaaduvaan”, in line with Nam Perumal, Nam Azhwaar, Nam Pillai, Nam Jeeyar. Nampaaduvaan was born in Panar caste, in a village called Muni near Thirukurungudi foothills and was a stuanch devotee of Nambi. He used to sing songs praising Nambi about His virtues with his Veena (Yaazh). Varaha Perumal admired Nampaaduvaan’s devotion and told Bhoomi Piratti that Nampaaduvaan showed his devotion and did all prayers without expecting anything in return.
In Kaliyugam, reciting His holy names (Namasankeerthanam) is considered as the best method to do prayers. Thirupaanazhwaar, is also from Panar Caste and played a musical instrument like veena.
On one of Sukla Paksha Ekadasi day (11th day after new moon) in the Tamil month of Karthigai, (in between November 15th and Dec 15th), Nampaaduvaan woke up after midnight and started towards the temple in Thirukurungudi, with his veena to sing hymns to wake up Emperumaan. On his way to the temple, Nampaaduvaan was confronted and caught by a Brahma Rakshas (fierce ghostly form) a demon. Brahma Rakshasan was very strong and Nampaaduvaan was very weak. Brahma Rakshasan told that he was hungry and he was going to eat Nampaaduvaan as his food. Since Nampaaduvaan was not strong, he could not show any of his valour. Also he was not a brahmin, so he could not escape by reciting any mantras. So he decided to talk sweetly after leaving everything to Nambi, Thirukurungudi Emperumaan.
Nampaaduvaan started saying that he was ready to offer himself as food and there was nothing much happier to him than to be the food to the Brahma Rakshasan. He continued stating that he was in the midst of performing Ekadasi vow (vratham) and should complete the vow by offering his prayers to Nambi in the early morning. Nampaaduvaan promised that he would return after completing his prayers and thereafter he could be taken as food as per what was written for them by Brahmma or Naanmugan. But Brahma Rakshasan refused as he did not believe the words of Nampaaduvaan. Brahma Rakshasan said that Nampaaduvaan was reciting prayers to Nambi for more than 10 years, like what Nammazhwaar told in Thiruvaaimozhi, “nigaril avan pugazh paadi illaipilam” (1.7.10), and he was hungry as he did not eat for the last ten days. He argued that, no one in this world would come back and offer oneself as food. Nampaaduvaan changed his tactics and requested him that his vow was towards Emperumaan and the Brahma Rakshas should help in making sure that it did not get disturbed. Brahma Rakshasan refused to leave him and said that Nampaaduvaan wanted to escape and hence he was lying.
Nampaaduvaan said that he was a devotee of Vishnu, from Panar community and possesed knowledge on Paramathmaa that helped him to acquire knowledge similar to people in higher community and he would not lie. He started making promises and also explained the different types of sins that would come to him, if he broke any of the promises. Nampaaduvaan listed eighteen such promises and appealed to Brahma Rakshasan to let him go and complete his vow.
In Kaisika Puranam, eighteen types of sins are listed if the defined responsibilities are not carried out.
Nampaaduvaan promised that he would come back and if he did not come back, he would get many sins that could lead him to the hell. The following are the eighteen different sins :
The last of the promises illustrate the beleif of Nampaaduvaan on Vishnu, where he vowed that he would get the sin that one would get, if offered prayers and considered the other gods to be equivalent to the Supreme Lord, Sriman Narayanan. After hearing this, the Rakshas was terrified and got convinced that no one would ever make such a promise and was confident that Nampaaduvaan would return. He saluted and let Nampaaduvaan go and return after completing his prayers and vow.
Like a person attaining moksham from this worldly life, Nampaaduvaan was happy and ran towards Nambi’s temple and started singing on Nambi with on many tunes. He was standing outside, following the tradition on those days, and sang emotionally , thinking, that day was the last time he would sing in front of Nambi, as he would become food for the Brahma Rakshasan on his return.
Nambi happy with His devotee asked the flag pole, generally erected in front of the main Sanctom in every Vishnu temple, to move so that Nampaaduvaan could get a complete dharsan of Nambi. Accordingly even today, this temple’s flag pole is seen slightly away from the centre. Emperunaan graced Nampaaduvaan and Nampaaduvaan also got a complete dharsan of Nambi on that day.
Nampaaduvaan finally rendered a song based on Kaisika raga (Bhairavi ragam) on Vadivazhagiya Nambi and completed his vow. He offered his prayers to Nambi. Happily and quickly was returning towards Brahma Rakshasan, as his soul would leave the painful body. On his way, a passerby appeared and as if to test Nampaaduvaan, told that there was a demon on that way and advised him to go in a different path, as the demon was not a good person, like Vibhishnan. Nampaaduvaan was not prepared to defer from his promise and he replied that he would prefer to die rather than breaking a promise. On seeing the firmness of Nampaaduvaan, the passerby wished both Nampaaduvaan and Brahma Rakshasan well and disappeared. Varaha Perumal explaining this story to Bhoomadevi said that He went as the passerby as “Maha Varaha Sputa Padma Lochanaha” and “Purusha Pushkarekshanaha”.
Nampaaduvaan found Brahma Rakshasan and declared that he completed his vow by singing in front of Thirukurungudi Nambi, Mahavishnu, the driving force of everything and making Him happy. He offered himself immediately to Brahma Rakshasan as his food. Brahma Rakshasan stunned with Nampaaduvaan’s truthfulness, started talking to Nampaaduvaan. He told Nampaaduvaan that he was not hungry and asked him to gift the benefits (punyam) of his singing in front of Vishnu to him, and he would let Nampaaduvaan go free. Nampaaduvaan refused to give the benefits of his singing and insisted that Brahma Rakshasan should eat him as per the original agreement. Brahma Rakshasan now asked Nampaaduvaan to gift him the benefits of only half the number of songs in stead of all songs. Again Nampaaduvaan refused. Brahma Rakshasan now requested him to give the benefits of the last song alone, so that he would let Nampaaduvaan to get back to his home to live along with his wife and children.
Even then Nampaaduvaan refused to his request. Brahma Rakshasan realised that Nampaaduvaan valued his words more than his life and also knew the value of the benefits of his singing in front of Vishnu. So he spoke politely, and with respect to Nampaaduvaan. He surrendered to Nampaaduvaan, saying that he would be absolved from this demon form and liberated, if he could get the benefits of the last song from Nampaaduvaan. Nampaaduvaan took pity on Brahma Rakshasan and asked him how he became a Brahma Rakshasan in the first place. Brahma Rakshasan started telling his story.
In his previous life, he was born as Soma Sarma, a brahmin and a great scholar in conducting Yagnams. He did a yagnam ( sacrifising rituals with fire) on behalf of someone. Since he started the yagnam with an intention to earn quick wealth, he got a disease in his stomach. He died within five days of starting the yagnam and without completing the yagnam. The shortcoming of the incomplete yagnam made him an utmost sinful person and he took birth as a Brahma Rakshasan. Varaha Perumal, who was describing this event to Bhoomi Piratti, said that Nampaaduvaan provided shelter to Brahma Rakshasan, like Himself providing shelter to Vibishanan, as Rama incarnation. Nampaaduvaan gave the benefits of his last song, in Kaisika tune, that was sung in front of Thirukurungudi Nambi. Brahma Rakshasan was relieved of his demon birth immediately and took birth in his next life in a good family. He became a Vishnu devotee and attained Moksham or Paramapadham according to Varaha Perumal to Boomi Pirati. In this way, Nampaaduvaan was able to send Brahma Rakshasan to Paramapadham. Thereafter Nampaaduvaan served Thirukurungudi Nambi for many years with his songs and later he also attained moksham, according to Varaha Perumal.
So, Brahma Rakshasan, a brahmin, (Soma Sarma), got moksham by surrendering himself to Nampaaduvaan, a person born in a lowly caste, through Nampaaduvaan’s devotion of performing Namasankeertham, that was glorified by Emperumaan.
The moral of Nampaaduvaan’s life is that Nama Sankeerthanam of Lord can help us attain Moksham.
The eighteen sins mentioned above are in sequence in terms of the severity and the last one, the eighteenth is the gravest of these eighteen sins, that is considering Lord Sriman Narayanan to be equivalent to any other god. So the essence of Kaisika Mahathmiyam is that we should be wise and abstain from making any of these sins.
We can see that Nampaaduvaan had established that those people who consider Sriman Narayanan being equivalent to other gods or offer prayers to other gods other than Sriman Narayana would attain hell, as they were considered to have committed a grave sin.
Whoever devoted purely to Mahavishnu and surrendered to Him totally is a Sri Vaishnavan and should not be differentiated or illtreated, considering his birth. This is one of the fundamental principles of our tradition. The life history of Thirupaanazhwaar and Nampaaduvaan are vivid examples of such tradition.
Lord Varaha proved to the world through Nampaaduvaan and a Brahma Rakshasan that birth and caste are mere physical status. What matters is devotion and adherence to truth.
Devotion to lord, adherence to Dharma and readiness to renounce the world are the important criterias.
Someone born as a brahmin, but leading a lowly life, would be born as a demon. Someone born in a lowly caste, but truly devoted to god, would uplift not only themselves, but also uplift, elavate and create a good path to moksham to all other lowly demons.
Caste is not an hindrance in attaining moksham.
We have to follow the vow or vratham on the Kaisika Ekadasi day and recite the Kaisika Mahathmiyam on the next day, Kaisika Dwadasi day.
As per the orders of Mahavishnu, all the sins will hide under food grains on Ekadasi days, hence we should observe fasting on Ekadasi days. There are people who do not even drink water on those days, called Nirjala vratham, meaning that No Water, No food Vow. The vow starts on the early morning (sunrise) time of the Ekadasi day and is completed on the next day (Dwadasi) early morning (sunrise). On Dwadasi day, after bath, people should drink the holy water with Thulasi leaf, and complete the Ekadasi vow.
Through out the Ekadasi day, one should be thinking only about Vishnu as reciting His slokas, His histories and the hymns on Him.
Varaha Perumal, while praising Nampaaduvaan, said to Thayaar, that whoever sings about His glories and histories would be awarded 1000 years in heaven for each syllable of the hymn.
He continued to state that when Nampaaduvaan or such devotee is in Heaven, He or She would be the most beautiful and they would remember Emperumaan and Thayaar. Even the head of Heaven, Indran with his prime weapon Vajrayudham would visit him or her and pay respects.
Even when Indran is paying his respects, Nampaaduvaan or such devotee would continue to praise and sing hymns on Emperumaan and Thayaar and would continue to serve Emperumaan and Thayaar.
Similarly when Nampaaduvaan was singing in heaven, his songs were made to be heard by others in heaven. Varaha Perumal told Thayar that since Nampaaduvaan was continuing his good service to Emperumaan, He moved him out of heaven and brought him to Paramapadham, so that he would sing only for Them and forever.
Whoever sings piously in Kaisika Tune (Bhairavi ragam), in front of Emperumaan, will be able to protect those who seek help from them.
Varaha Perumal had also promised to Bhoomipiraati that who sing or hear Kaisika Mahathmiyam would reach Paramapadham.
Varaha Perumal Himself told that all those who sing and/or hear Kaisika Puranam on a Sukla Paksha Dwadasi day in front of Emperumaan would always be with devotees and keep singing highly of Vishnu’s glories, similar to “Soozhndhu Irundhu yethuvar Pallaandu“. With that Varaha Perumal concluded His briefing on Kaisika Mahathmiyam.
Many benefits are cited in many Puranas for following the vratham on any Ekadasi day. There are also some special benefits for specific ekadasi and some are listed below.
The main deity of Thirukurungudi, Vaishnava Nambi will have a Holy bathing (Thirumanjanam or Abishekam) ceremony. Kaisika Mahathmiyam would be conducted as a drama in front of Vaishnava Nambi from 10 pm till 2 am. On Kaisika Dwadasi Day, Vaishnava Nambi will have a special procession on his Garuda Bird (Garuda sevai). Though all Vishnu temples celebrate Kaisika Ekadasi, it is always a special event in Thirukurungudi, every year, even today.
Sri Parasara Bhattar chanted Kaisika puranam before Lord Ranganatha on one of the Kaisika Ekadasi/Dwadasi day and the same tradition is continuing till date with the descendants of Bhattar, chanting the puranam on kaisika dwadasi day at Srirangam every year. On the Kaisika Ekadasi day, Namperumal takes the holy bathing (Thirumanjanam). After 9 pm, in Archuna Mandapam, Perumal has special ceremony, where He would be adorned with 365 drapes. By the time this gets finished, around midnight (12 am), the heirs of Parasara Bhattar / Vedavyasa Bhattar will recite the Kaisika Mahathmiyam, and will also make a special request to Namperumal to give moksham to all those who listened to this great gift by Nambi/Namperumal. Namperumal will be happy and the temple authorities will accord due respects to the heirs of Parasara Bhattar, like taking him through the streets of Thiruvarangam (Uthira veedhi) to his residence. At 5.45 am, Namperumal will get back from Archuna Mandapam and return to His Sanctum. This is called “Karpoora Padiyetra Sevai”.
In other Vishnu Temples similar renditions are done on Kaisika Ekadasi, mostly in the evening or early morning of Dwadasi Day and celebrated in a grand manner.
Amara or angam aarum, vedham or naangum odhi, thamarkalil thalaivaraaya saadhi andhanargalelum, numargalai pazhippar aagil, nodipadhu or alavil aange, avargal thaam pulaiyar polum, Arangamaa nagarulaane ! (Thirumaalai 43)
This hymn is by Thondaradipodi Azhwaar in his Thirumaalai Prabhandham. The meaning of this hymn is that if those, who have learnt and memorised the four vedas and the six explanatory notes along with their meanings, illtreat the devotees of Vishnu, based on their caste, even if they are Brahmins, they would be considered to have come from a lowly caste.
Next hymn is by Nammazhwaar in Thiruvaaimozhi (3.7.9)
Kulamthaangu saathigal naalilum keezh izhindhu ethanai nalanthaan ilaadha chandaala chandaalargal aagilum, valanthaangu chakrathu annal Manivannarku aal endru ul kalanthaar adiyaar thammadiyaar em adigale (Thiruvaalmozhi 3.7.9)
If someone is born in a community lower than the lowest of the four, like Chandala, and is a devotees of Vishnu, (Manivannar), who holds the discus on His right hand, Swami Nammazhwaar wanted to be a devotee to them.
Next one is also from Nammazhwaar, where he has gone even one step ahead.
Payilum sudar oli Moorthiyai, Pangaya Kannanai, payila iniya nam paarkadal serntha Paramanai, payilum thiru udaiyaar evarelum avar kandeer, payilum pirappidai thotru emmai aalum paramare (Thiruvaaimozhi 3.7.1)
Here Azhwaar says that whoever serves Emperumaan would be his master in this life and also for future lives.
We have taken only a few hymns (Paasurams), a few divya desams, and a few sthothrams on Varaha Incarnation . We started this as a small topic, however we were overwhelmed with so much details available on this Varaha Incarnation and Kaisika Mahathmiyam.
As mentioned earlier, Kaisika Mahathmiyam is an important part of Varaha Puranam. Let us catch up on another interesting topic, till then, thanks and see you.

As the saying goes ” Thirumaalai (the prabandham) ariyaadhaar, Thirumaalaye (Perumalai) ariyaadhaar”, we all need to learn and understand Thirumaalai , sung by Thondaradipodi Azhwaar, to know more and more about Emberumaan / Perumal. In the first three hymns of this Divyaprabandham, Azhwaar enjoyed the experiences, graced by Perumal on him and in the subsequent eleven hymns, Azhwaar was preaching his experiences with Paramathma. After Azhwaar realised that people did not follow his preaching, he denounced such people. They pleaded Azhwaar with many excuses. Azhwaar responded by asking them to follow Sri Rama, when he mentioned “silaiyinaal ilangai setra devane devan aavaan”; Azhwaar asked them to follow Sri Krishna by stating ‘katrinam meitha kazhalinai panimin‘, and took them along to Thiruvarangan, by mentioning ‘uybavaruku uyyum vannam Thiruvarangam kaatinaan”.
In spite of above, people did not follow Azhwaar’s preaching, he decided to leave us and started to sing about the great help graced by Periyaperumaal to him in the next ten hymns. We discussed the first of these hymns, which is the fifteenth paasuram, ‘Meiyerke Meiyanaagum‘. In that hymn, Azhwaar stated that Permal does all the things, for those who show truthful devotion to him; He also protects those who do things related to devotion which are not really truthful, but could be classified as truthful; He lets down those who are not even doing false devotion as mentioned above. In the next hymn, “Virumbi nindru“, azhwaar stated that previously he did not use his hands to pray, mouth to say prayers or heart to devote himself to Perumal. Perumal used His soft and sweet beauty to melt the hardened heart of Azhwaar.
Initially, Azhwaar was happy about the opportunity he got to have the dharsan of Thiruvarangan, who is without any peer, ruling the entire kingdom and that happiness caused continuous tears from his eyes. With tears, he could not enjoy the dharsan continuously. So Azhwaar was worried and frustrated at himself in not making use of the opportunity offered to him and hence he called himself as a sinner in the next hymn, “ini thirai thivalai“.
Now let us go into the next hymn.
Kuda thisai mudiyai vaithu, guna thisai paadham neeti, vada thisai pinbu kaati, then thisai Ilangai nokki, kadal nira kadavul endhai, aravanai thuyilumaa kandu, udal enaku urugu maalo en seygen ulagatheere (Thirumaali 19)
In the last hymn, Azhwaar mentioned how his eyes were filled with tears while having dharsan of Periyaperumal. In this hymn, Azhwaar said that his whole body, including the eyes, was getting melted and enquired people around him about what he should do to be like themselves, as they seemed to be strong even after the dharsan. In the first two lines Azhwaar mentioned which melted him that way.
Emberumaan created celestial upper world for those (Devargal) who had done more good things. Similarly Perumal created this lower world for the plants, animals and people like us, who have done both good and bad deeds (sins). Azhwaar understood and appreciated this creation of the two directions, top and bottom. But he did not realise the benefits of creating the other directions, north, south, east and west. After completing this hymn, Azhwaar understood the importance of these four directions. Perumal created the whole world for the people to live here, and He created the other four directions to keep and to attribute His parts of the body in each of the directions so that people living in these directions could get the dharsan of His beauty which would help them attain moksham.
Emberumaan has kept His Holy head with the crown in the direction of West, so that people living in the western direction could get the benefits of His dharsan of the holy head and attain Moksham. According to Azhwaar, the crown on His head, declares that He is King or the leader (Swami) of the whole world. Here we can recall the hymn in Thiruvaaimozhi (3.8.1), where Nammazhwaar states that He is the one who alone rules all the worlds. The hymn starts with “Mudiyaane“, referring to His Crown or His holy head.
In the same Thiruvaaimozhi hymn (3.8.1) Swami Nammazhwaar said “moovulagum thozhudhethum seer adiyaane“, meaning, “He with holy feet, is the one who is prayed and glorified by all those living in all the worlds”. In the same way, Thondaradipodiazhwaar said that Periyaperumal has extended His holy feet, essential for all to get abode, in the eastern direction. Azhwaar used the word ‘extended’ instead of ‘kept’ to highlight that His holy feet extended in the eastern direction till Thiru Mandankudi, the home town of Azhwaar and captivated him. Thirupaanazhwaar had also mentioned such extension of His feet, in his Amalanaadhipiraan, as “thiru kamala paadham vandhu en kannil ullana okinradhey” meaning that the holy lotus feet extended till Azhwaar’s eyes, who was then in Uraiyoor.
Since Perumal does not have the principle of blessing only those who are good and letting down those who are not good, His holy feet has the speciality of attracting both good and bad people and getting obeisances from them both. Even what was said earlier, that He lets down people, with reference to “poyyarke poyyanaagum“, is also in a way doing good to them, as He stops them doing further sins in this life.
Alavandaar, one of the achaaryars, used to have dharsan of Periyaperumal only from the eastern direction, the direction of the holy feet. He also used to quote that he would not take a place by the side of His holy crown, the western direction, as it was the place for Dhuryodhanan, the evil Kaurava of Mahabharatham.
When we discuss about His holy feet, we recall what Vendantha Desikan, another achaaryar has mentioned in his Padhuka Sahasram. He mentioned that Lord Rama could have done all the deeds in Ramayana, by Himself alone like Mathsya, Koorma, Varaaha and Nrusimha incarnations; but He made Himself into Bharatha, Lakshmana and Chatrugna so that He could do the prayers to His own feet, like everyone else. Had He done the same thing, by Himself, the world would have laughed at Him; so He came to this world as Bharatha and did the same.
Namperumal, Utsavar of Srirangam is Sri Rama, Chakravarthi Thirumagan. He is the same deity, worshipped by the kings of Ikshvaaku dynasty. He is also the same, gifted by Sri Rama during His coronation to Vibishnan (Rama Pattabhishekam). Therefore Sri Rama, Srirangam Ranganathar (Periyaperumal) and Namperumal are Sriman Narayana. Parasara Bhattar, one of our achaaryars, raised a question whether it is appropriate for Him to do prayers to Himself and clarified, since He alone knows His glories which is not a familiar territory for others, did not appoint anyone else to do prayers on His behalf and enjoys doing the same by Himself. And by doing this, Perumal is enjoying His own beauty, according to Parasara Bhattar.
Since the northern direction is abundant with many scholars and experts in Sanskrit but less exposed to Tamil and ignorant about the compassionate hymns of Azhwaars, Periyaperumal had to reserve the best of His beauties, that is His backside, for them. His backside beauty would render them speechless. It is often hailed by Azhwaars and Acharyaars that Perumal’s beauty of the backside is exceptional than His frontside. Pillai Perumal Iyengar in his Kovilanthaadhi, mentioned that Azhagiyamanavaalan, or Sriranganathan had other names, like, ‘munnilum pin azhagiya perumal’ meaning, He is more beautiful from the backside, than His frontside and ‘aabharanathirku azhagu kodukkum perumaal‘, meaning that the jewellery gets additional beauty, when worn by Him. The devotees hail “munnilum pin azhagiya perumaal vazhiyave“, meaning, the prayers for the perumal whose beauty of the backside is superior to the front side.
Namperumal, in Srirangam temple, has a beautiful ambience. Namperumal, the Utsava moorthy, is beautiful Himself, His backside is much more gorgeous or glorious than His front side (Munnilum pin azhagiya perumal) and He starts looking the other sides. In front is Garudan, the gigantic bird , sitting politely; on His both sides are the beautiful Ubhaya naachimaargal, (Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi Thayars); behind Him Azhagiya Manavaalan Himself, (moolavar), reclining on Ananthaazhwaan, the five headed snake. With all that beautiful settings starting from Himself and in all directions, Namperumal would not feel satisfied, according to Bhattar. He keeps on bettering His beauty to attract and grace more of devotees.
Nampillai, one of our acharyaars,, had a disciple by name, Pinbazhagiya Perumal Jeeyar also known as Pinbazhagaraam Perumal Jeeyar. He was captivated so much by the extreme beauty of Emperuman’s backside (Thiruvarangam, Namperumal), he changed his name as above. He wrote the book on Guruparamparai, highlighted the life histories of our Azhwaars and Acharyaars. He, even though a monastic, served Nampillai, a family person, much similar to Nanjeeyar (monastic) who served Bhattar. He delivered a very valuable message to our tradition, the importance of taking care of the physical health/care of his acharyar / teacher. (both Bhattar and Nampillai were family people).
The commentator has given a specific explanation for the northern direction. Here the commentator says that Perumal has shown his backside for the benefit of people who are living in the northern direction whereas for the other direction the explanation does not include the people. The reason may be that the people from the northern directions are tougher than people from other directions.
Azhwaar stated that He placed His holy parts of His body in the three directions, North, East and West to nullify the uselessness of these directions, but the fact that He is looking at the Southern direction is to get rid of His fault of not accompanying Vibhishnan after the Rama’s coronation (Pattabishekam) during Ramayana days. Azhwaar said that what He did for the other three directions is a help or grace to those living in those directions, but what He did for the Southern direction alone is a help to Himself. Now let us look what other Azhwaars talk about the southern direction.
Kulasekara Azhwaar said “then thisai nokki palli kollum”, (Perumal Thirumozhi 1.10), meaning that Periyaperumal is in a reclining position facing south. We can reason that Periyaperumal is facing the south direction, because it is where Vibishanan, His beloved devotee was living.
Periyazhwaar, in his Periyazhwaar Thirumozhi, (4.9.2) stated that Periyaperumal is facing the south, only for Vibhishnan, as “mannudaiya Vibidanarkaai madhil Ilangai thisai nokki malar kann vaitha, ennudaiya Thiruvarangar’, meaning that after destroying Vibhishnan’s enemies, and giving the kingdom back to him, Thiruvarangan is enjoying and looking towards Sri Lanka in the southern direction, only for the sake of Vibishanan. The commentator added that it was like a mother getting happiness on feeding a child by observing the joy in the child’s face.
Next let us see what Thirumangai Azhwaar sang about Vibhishnan. Before that we need to understand how much of affection that Sri Rama had for Sugreevan. Before Rama-Ravana War in Lanka, Sugreevan, could not tolerate seeing ten crowns on the ten heads of Ravana and Rama not having any on His holy head. Suddenly, without bothering about anything, Sugreevan, the king of monkeys, lunged towards Ravana and snatched the ten crowns of Ravana in a matter of seconds and submitted them on the Holy feet of Rama. A worried Rama reacted by advising Sugreeva that he should not do such hasty actions without proper planning or thinking. Rama continued that He might not know what he would do, in case something happened to Sugreevan. Rama said that having Seetha, Lakshmanan, Bharathan and Sathrugnan would not render any use to Him, without Sugreevan alive as He considered Sugreevan as dear as these people. Rama’s final set of words, compared His affection towards Sugreevan to that of Seetha, Bharathan, Lakshmanan and Chatrugnan. Such was the affection that Rama had for Sugreevan. (Yudha Kaantam, 41.4)
Now let us look at how much affection Rama had for Vibhishnan. This is also from Yudha Kaantam, but before Rama and his army reached Lanka. Vibhishnan was against Ravana’s actions and left Lanka, with all his wealth and decided to surrender to Rama. He reached the Indian Coast, where Rama was camping. Sugreevan, stopped Vibhishnan from meeting Rama and recommended to Rama that Vibhishnan had come from their enemy’s camp and should not be given protection. Sugreevan stressed that he with his army would pull out from Rama’s camp, if Rama agreed to shelter Vibhishnan. Rama wanted to protect Vibhishnan, as how a cow would give priority to the calf born on that day in protecting, as to the older calves. Rama went on to say that he would provide shelter to Vibhishnan even if Sugreevan and his army left Him. Later Sugreevan changed his mind and supported Rama’s decision. Thirumangai Azhwaar used this in his Periya Thirumozhi (6.8.5) “selva Vibidanaruku veraaga nallanai” , meaning Perumal had so much affection towards Vibhishnan. Vibhishnan left all his wealth in Lanka and came empty handed, but Azhwaar says that he was full of Vaishnavasree, possessing the wealth of devotion towards Rama, in the word “selva‘. Thondaradipodi Azhwaar stated in this hymn that Perumal is facing south, only for that Vibhishnan, who was so dear to Him.
We can enjoy the different verbs used by Azhwaar for the four directions. For western direction, he used the word KEPT, for east , the word “EXTENDED”, for the North, the word “SHOWED” and for south, Azhwaar used the word “LOOKING”, which suggests an intentional and continuous action from Perumal whereas the words used for other directions are more passive and a representation of one time action.
In this world there are only seven Divyadesams out of 106, where Perumal faces southern direction. They are Srirangam, Thirumeyyam, Thiruchirupuliyur, Thiru Neeragam, Thiru Kaaragam, Thiru Vithuvakodu and Thiru Kaatkarai.
Nithyasooris are waiting and desirous to have the dharsan of Paramathma all the times. Such is the glory of Paramathma. But here, Azhwaar says that Paramathma is waiting in Thiruvarangam, to get one devotee or Jeevathmaa. Sea has a quality of removing the fatigue of those who watch it. Similarly Periyaperumal also removes the fatigues of those who have the dharsan of Him. So Azhwaar called Him here, as Kadal nira kadavul, meaning that Perumal has the same colour of sea. The word Kadavul, means beyond, and hence Azhwaar says that the colour may be same as sea, but He is Beyond Everything.
Perumal displayed His entire beauty to Azhwaar, that made Azhwaar to surrender to Him totally. So Azhwaar used the word “endhai“, to mean Him as Father. Azhwaar also questioned why should someone repair the old well, when the new well is ready for use. In this example, Azhwaar pointed himself as new well and the nithyasoories as the old well. The nithyasoories surrendered totally and serving Him all the times, because Perumal displayed His beauty to them. This happened long, long ago, whereas the recent addition was Thondaradipodi Azhwaar as seen in this hymn. Azhwaar also mentioned that he was in the lowest place among His devotees and if he can be corrected by Perumal by showing His beauty, according to Azhwaar, everyone else could get moksham by having a dharsan of His beauty. Nammazhwaar in his Thiruvaaimozhi (3.3.4), mentioned “Easan vaanavarku enban, endraal adhu desamo Thiruvenkadathaanuku, neesanen nirai onrum illen en kann paasam vaitha param sudar sothike” meaning that Perumal had shown love and affection towards Azhwaar, who considered himself to be lowly and meritless.
‘Aravanai Thuyiluma Kandu‘ talks about the reclining state of Periyaperumal on the multiheaded snake. The commentator compares this with a priceless gem being fixed on a very expensive golden cot and concludes by saying that after reclining on Aadhiseshan, Periyaperumal’s beauty had enhanced from the perspective of His devotees.
Azhwaar stated that it was not a wonder, if a knowledgeable devotee or Jeevathmaa who could appreciate and enjoy the form of Periyaperumal, melting physically and mentally. But he was wondering how it (melting of body and heart) could happen to him, when he did not have the knowledge to enjoy the beauty of Periyaperumaal. When those people who came along with him told that it did not happen to them, Azhwaar reiterated by stating “enakku’, meaning that it was only for himself.
Ramanujar mentioned in Saranagathi Gatyam,(12) “bhagawat swaroopa thirodhaanakareem” meaning it is jeevathmaa’s body (or eye) that prevents the sight of Paramathma’s swaroopam; however, when it is sighted, the body of the jeevathmaa is broken or melted. The reason for the jeevathmaa in not realising the swaroopam of the Athma is because of the association of the body with Athma, according to Brahmasoothram (3.2.5). The commentator states that it is really a wonder, when the body or the eyes, which is part of the body, which prevents the sight of Athma in the first place, gets broken or melted when it sees the Athma without hiding the Athma.
When a river overflows and water crossing the banks of a river, people who are protecting the banks would give up and ask for help. Thondaradipodi Azhwaar was in such a state when his mind and body started melting after having the dharsan of Periyaperumal, and he called out for help from people who had dharsan with Azhwaar but remained without any change in their body or mind. Azhwaar was asking them to give him a suggestion on how they were able to be like a stone without any melting of their body or heart.
First Azhwaar thought of seeking help from other Azhwaars, but they had already melted. It was like going from a leaking boat to enter into a broken boat. Then Azhwaar thought of asking Perumal Himself, but Perumal would become proud in melting Azhwaar and Azhwaar did not want to be the reason for making Perumal proud. And those are the reasons why Azhwaar was asking for help from people who were strong, even after having had the dharsann of Periyaperumal, and asking them a small portion of any such medicine that kept them strong.
Let us catch up again in the next hymn, thanks
