பலராம அவதாரம்:

கோகுலத்தில் விஷ்ணுவின் அம்சமாக வசுதேவருக்குப் பிறந்த பிள்ளை பலராமன். பெருமாள் வெண்ணிறத்தில் தோன்றிய அவதாரம் இது. ராமாவதாரத்தில் தம்பியாக இருந்த லட்சுமணனை தனக்கு அண்ணனாக விஷ்ணு ஏற்றதாகக் கூறுவர்.  பலராமரின் ஆயுதம் கலப்பை.  

பலராமன் பிறப்பு

கம்ஸன் என்ற அசுரன் மதுராவை  ஆண்டு வந்தான்.  அவன் தங்கை, ராஜகுமாரியாகிய தேவகிக்கும், வசுதேவர் என்பவருக்கும் திருமணம் நடந்தது.  திருமணம் ஆனதும் தம்பதியர் வீடு திரும்பும் போது கம்ஸனுக்கு ஓர் அசரீரி கேட்டது. “கம்ஸா,  உன் தங்கை தேவகிக்கு பிறக்கும் எட்டாவது குழந்தை உன் உயிரை வாங்கப் போகிறது” என்று அசரீரி சொல்லியது. அப்போதே கம்ஸன் தேவகியைக் கொன்று விட்டால் தன்  உயிருக்கு பிரச்சனை இல்லை என்று வாளை உருவி அவளைக் கொல்லப் போனான். அப்போது  வசுதேவன் கம்ஸனிடம் வேண்டி இவளை கொல்ல வேண்டாம்,  நான் இவளுக்குப் பிறக்கும் குழந்தைகளை உன்னிடம் கொடுத்து விடுகிறேன். நீ அவற்றைஎன்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்து கொள்  என்று தன் மனைவிக்கு வந்த ஆபத்தை நீக்கி கொண்டார்.

தேவகிக்குப் பிறந்த ஆறு குழந்தைகளையும் கொன்றான். ஏழாவது சிசுவை தேவகி கருத்தரித்தாள். அந்தக் கருவில் ஆதிசேஷனே உருவானான். அச்சமயம் மகாவிஷ்ணு தனது யோக மாயை மூலம் ஓர் ஏற்பாடு செய்தார். அவர் யோகமாயாவை வரவழைத்து, தேவி! வசுதேவருக்கு ரோகிணி என்ற வேறு ஒரு மனைவி உண்டு. அவள் ஆயர்பாடியில் இருக்கிறாள். மதுராவில் தேவகியின் வயிற்றில் ஆதிசேஷன் கருக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான். நீ அந்தக் குழந்தையை ரோகிணியின் கர்ப்பத்திற்கு மாற்றி விடு. அத்துடன் நீ நந்தகோபன் மனைவி யசோதையிடம் பெண்ணாகப் பிறக்க வேண்டும். நான் தேவகியின் வயிற்றில் திருஅவதாரம் செய்யப் போகிறேன். இதன் பிறகு நீ  காளி, வைஷ்ணவி என்றும் மக்கள் உன்னை வழிபடுவார்கள் என்றார். பரந்தாமன் கட்டளைப்படி மாயாதேவி தேவகியின் கர்ப்பத்திலிருந்து குழந்தையை ரோகிணி கர்ப்பத்திற்கு மாற்றினாள். தேவகியின் கர்ப்பம்  சிதைந்து போயிற்று என கம்ஸனிடம் தெரிவித்தனர்.

ஆதிசேஷன் பலராமராக ஆயர்பாடியில் அவதரித்தார். ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணனும் மதுராவிலும்,  யோகமாயா பிருந்தாவனத்திலும் அவதரித்தார்கள். பரமாத்மாவின் திருவுள்ளப்படி  ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணனும் யோகமாயாவும் இடம் மாறினார்கள்.    யோகமாயா கம்ஸனிடம் தேவகியின் எட்டாவது குழந்தை என்று கொடுக்கப்பட்டாள்.   கம்ஸன் அவளை கொல்ல முயற்சித்த போது அவள் அவனிடம் இருந்து பறந்துபோய் ஒரு எட்டு கை உள்ள  பெண் தெய்வமாய், காளி என்றும், வைஷ்ணவி என்றும் பரமாத்மாவின் சகோதரியாகவும் அவதரித்தார்.   மேலும் கம்சனிடம் உன்னுடைய எதிரி வேறு எங்கோ வளர்கிறான் என்றும் கம்ஸன் கொல்லப்படுவது உறுதி என்றும் சொல்லி மறைந்தாள்.

கோகுலத்தில் பலராமர்

கோகுலத்தில் இருந்தபோது பலராமர் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணனுடன் எப்போதும் கூட இருந்து அவருக்கு துணையாகவே இருந்தார்.    ஒன்றாகவே இருவரும் வளர்ந்தனர்.  பின்பு ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர் கம்ஸனை கொன்ற போதும் அவர் கூடவே இருந்தார்.   அதேபோல் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணன் அரசனாகி துவாரகையில் ஒரு அரண்மனை நிர்மாணித்த போதும் பலராமர் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணனுடன் சென்றார்.

மகாபாரதத்தில் பலராமர்

துவாரகையில் கிருஷ்ணனும் பலராமனும் இருந்த சமயம் குருஷேத்திரம் போருக்கு முன்னாள் பலராமன் தீர்த்த யாத்திரைக்கு கிளம்பினார். ஒவ்வொரு தலமும் தரிசித்து ஆங்காங்கே உள்ள பக்தர்களுக்கு பலராமன் தான தருமங்கள் செய்து கொண்டே வந்தார்.

நைமிசாரண்யத்திற்கு வந்த போது அங்கே எல்லா மகரிஷிகளும் சந்திரயாகம் செய்து கொண்டு இருந்தார்கள். அனைவரும் பலராமனைக் கண்டதும் அகமும் முகமும் மலர எழுந்து நின்று அவனை வரவேற்று நமஸ்காரம் செய்தனர். பதினெட்டுப் புராணங்களையும் மற்றவர்களுக்குத் உபதேசம் செய்த சூதர் மட்டும் எழுந்திருக்கவே இல்லை. சூதர்க்கு நூற்று எட்டு திவ்ய தேசங்களில் ஒன்றான நைமிசாரண்யத்தில் பலராமன் பாடம் கற்பித்தார்.

நாடெங்கிலும் சென்று தீர்த்த யாத்திரை முடித்து குருஷேத்திர யுத்தம் முடிவடையும் நேரம் அங்கே பலராமன் வந்தான். பீமனுக்கும் துரியோதனனுக்கும் இடையே கடும்போர் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது.  துரியோதனன் தொடையில் பீமன் கதையால் ஒங்கி அறைந்தான். இந்த அநியாயத்தை தாங்கிக் கொள்ள முடியாத பலராமர் பீமனைத் தாக்க கலப்பையைக் கையில் எடுத்தார்.  கண்ணன், அண்ணா! தயவு செய்து கலப்பையைக் கீழே போடுங்கள்.  துரியோதனன் ஆரம்பம் முதல் இன்று வரை தர்மத்திற்கு விரோதமாகவே நடந்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறான். அவனை பீமன் தொடையில் அடித்து அது முறிய அவனை மாளச் செய்வான்  என்று திரௌபதை சாபம் கொடுத்தாள் என்றான் கண்ணன். பலராமனும் கோபத்தைத் துறந்து நிலைமை புரிந்து சாந்தம் ஆனார்.

பலராமர், லக்ஷ்மன் இருவருமே  ஆதிசேஷனின் அம்சம் என்றும் கூறுவதுண்டு. ஐந்து தலை உடைய ஆதிசேஷன் ஆனவன் திருமாலுக்கு எப்போதும்,

“சென்றால் குடையாம், இருந்தால் சிங்காசனமாம், நின்றால் மரவடியாம், நீள்கடலுள் என்றும் புணையாம் மணிவிளக்காம், பூம் பட்டாம், புல்கும் அணையாம் , திருமாற்கு என்றும் அரவு ” . (முதல் திருவாந்தாதி, (53)

அதாவது ஆதிசேஷன் எப்போதும் ஏதாவது ஒரு வகையில் திருமாலுக்கு சேவை செய்து கொண்டு இருப்பான்.   அதுபோலவே பலராமரும் எப்போதும் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணருடன் இருந்து அவருக்கே துணையாக இருந்தார்.

இனி விஷ்ணு எடுக்கப்போகும் அவதாரமான கல்கியைப் பற்றியம் அந்தர்யாமியைப் பற்றியும்  அடுத்து காண்போம்.

Balarama Incarnation

Balarama was born to Vasudevar in Gokulam as another incarnation of Vishnu.    In this incarnation Vishnu was born with a beautiful white skin. In His incarnation as Rama, He had Lakshmanan as His younger brother.  He wanted to have him as His elder brother in His next incarnation and hence Balarama came as His elder brother in Krishna incarnation.    Balarama used Plough (Plow) as His weapon.

Birth of Balaraman :

Kamsan was a bad King in Mathura and his sister was Devaki.   Vasudevar got married to Devaki and on the wedding day, Kamsan was alerted by a heavenly voice, that the eighth child of Devaki and Vasudevar would kill him.  Kamsan got worried and he wanted to kill both Devaki and Vasudevar immediately.   Vasudevar pleaded for life for both Devaki and himself and suggested that they would surrender all the children they get immediately after birth and Kamsan could do whatever he wanted to do with the newborn babies. Kamsan agreed and sent both Vasudevar and Devaki to prison.   Both Devaki and Vasudevar gave all the first six children and Kamsan killed them one after the other.

Vasudevar also had another wife by name Rohini living in Gokulam. Yogamaya is the Lord’s divine power by which creation is enabled. The Lord assigns her specific tasks, the first to protect the fetus in Devaki’s seventh pregnancy by transferring it to Rohini. Next the incarnation of the Lord as Devaki’s eighth child and the birth of Yogamaya herself as the daughter of Yasodha and Nandagopan in Gokulam were charted out. By this process, when Sri Balarama would be born, He would  become the elder brother to the eighth child, who would also be another Incarnation of Vishnu, namely, Sri Krishna.  Devi accepted the directives readily.

With Adisesha born as Balarama, Krishna and Yogamaya are successfully swapped at birth. When Krishna was moved to Gokulam, Yogamayaa moved back to Mathura and handed over to Kamsan as the eighth child.   When Kamsan tried to kill Her, She escaped and took the form of a eight-handed goddess and incarnated as Vaishnavi, Kali and Lord’s sister. She warned Kamsan that his enemy was somewhere else and Kamsan would soon be killed.

Balarama in Gokulam

Balarama when in Gokulam, was always  with Krishna and very supportive to Sri Krishna. They both grew together and when Krishna killed Kamsan in Madura, Balarama was also with Him.    Later when Sri Krishna became the King, He constructed a new capital city called Dwaraka  in the western part of India and Balarama also moved along with Him.

Balarama in Mahabharatham

When Sri Krishnan and Balaramar were in Dwaraka, the stage was set for Mahabharatha war.   Balaramar, having decided not to participate in the war, started to go for a pilgrimage.   He went to many places and helped people in all these places.

When He reached Naimisaranyam, all the saints were doing an offering to Moon and when they noticed the presence of Sri Balarama, all except one saint by name Soothar, paid all the respects to Sri Balaramar.  Soothar is a very knowledgeable saint and he has taught all the 18 Puranaas to his disciples.    But when he did not pay respect to Balaramar, he had to undergo the punishment from Balaramar and then when all the saints requested Balaramar pardoned Soothar in Naimisaranyam, which is one of 108 most holy places for vaishnavites, called Divya Desams.  Divya Desams are places where Azhwaars have sung in praise of the Vishnu Deity residing in that place or temple.

After completing His pilgrimage,  Balaramar came to Gurukshetram, where the Mahabharatha War was about to be completed.    Beeman was fighting with Dhuriyodanan and Beema was hitting Dhuriyodanan below his waist, on the thigh.   Balarama could not tolerate this unacceptable act of Beema and prepared to start a fight with Beema.  Sri Krishna came to the scene and explained all the wrongful things done by Dhuriyodanan.  Sri Krishna also justified Beema’s act, by saying that this is due to the curse of Droupathi, who was disrespected by Dhuriyodanan in front of all in the courtyard.  Balarama understood the situation and moved away

Both  Lakshman and Balaraman are features of Aadhiseshan, who is the Five-Headed Snake serving as Bed for Vishnu, when He lies down or His umbrella when He goes out or His footwear when He walks or His Throne when He sits.  In other words, Aadhiseshan serves Vishnu at all times in some form or other.

“sendraal kudaiyaam, irunthaal singathanamaam, nindraal maravaidyaam, neezh kadalul, endrum punaiyaam, manivilkkam, poom pattaam,pulgum anaiyaam, thirumarku aravu”. – Muthal Thiruvanthaathi, 53
