முன்பு அச்சுதன் என்ற திரு நாமத்தின் பெருமையைப்  பார்த்தோம்.  இங்கே கோவிந்தன் என்ற திரு நாமத்தின் பெருமைகளைப் பார்ப்போம்.

• மகாவிஷ்ணுவுக்கு ஆயிரம் திருநாமங்கள் இருந்தாலும், பஞ்ச நாமாக்கள் என்று சொல்லபடுகின்ற ஐந்து திருநாமங்கள்  புகழ்பெற்றவை. ராமா, கிருஷ்ணா, கோவிந்தா, நாராயணா, நரசிம்மா என்னும் ஐந்தில் நடுநாயகமாக விளங்கும் கோவிந்த நாமமே இந்த வலைப்பதிவின் தலைப்பு.
• திருமலை ஏறும் போது பக்தர்கள் பொதுவாக உச்சரிக்கும் திருநாமம் கோவிந்தா, கோவிந்தா.
• திருப்பாவை என்ற திவ்யப்ரபந்ததில் ஆண்டாள் பெருமானின் பல திரு நாமங்களை சொல்லி இருக்கிறார்.   இருபத்தி ஏழு, இருபத்திஎட்டு மற்றும் இருபத்திஒன்பது பாடல்களில் ஆண்டாள், கோவிந்த என்ற திருநாமத்தினை மூன்று முறை, கூறுகிறார்.

  • கறவைகள் பின் சென்று …… குறை ஒன்றும் இல்லாத கோவிந்தா
  • சிற்றம் சிறு காலை…..   அன்று காண் கோவிந்தா
• பாஞ்சாலி உதவி என்று கண்ணனிடம் சரணாகதி அடையும் போது உபயோகித்த திருநாமம் கோவிந்தா.  “திரௌபதிக்கு, ஆபத்திலே  புடவை சுரந்தது கோவிந்த நாமமிறே”..
• ஆசமனம் என்ற ஒரு அரைநிமிட வைதிக சடங்கு எல்லா இந்துமத வைதிக கருமங்களிலும் பலமுறை திருப்பித் திருப்பிச் செய்யப்படும் ஒன்று. அதில் கோவிந்தா என்பது, விஷ்ணுவின் பன்னிரண்டு நாமங்களில் ஒரு முறையும், அச்சுதா, அனந்தா, கோவிந்தா என்று முதலில் ஒரு முறையும் சொல்லவேண்டி வரும். இதில் விசேஷம் என்னவென்றால், பன்னிருநாமங்களிலும் ‘கோவிந்தா‘ ஒரு முறை வருவதால், இங்கு எல்லா நாமங்களிலும் கோவிந்தநாமம் ஒன்று மட்டுமே இரண்டு முறை வரும் நாமம் ஆகின்றது.
• ஆன்மிக சொற்பொழிவுகளிலும்  தெய்வபஜனை  போதும் ஸர்வத்ர கோவிந்தநாமசங்கீர்த்தனம் கோவிந்தா, கோவிந்தா‘ என்று சொல்வது மிக பிரசித்திபெற்ற ஒன்றே.
• ஆதி சங்கரர் என்ற மதாச்சாரியாரின் புகழ் பெற்ற ஓர் எளிய வேதாந்த ஸ்தோத்திரம் பஜ கோவிந்தம் என்பது. இதில் ஆண்டவன் பெயராக ‘கோவிந்த’நாமம் எடுத்தாளப்பட்டது. சங்கரரின் குருவின் பெயர் கோவிந்தர் என்று இருந்ததாலும், கோவிந்த நாமத்தின் பெருமை தான் அப்படி எடுக்க செய்தது என்று சொல்வதுண்டு.
• விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமத்தில் 189 (கோவிந்தோ கோவிதாம் பதி) மற்றும் 543 (மகா வராஹா, கோவிந்தக) நாமங்களாக வருகின்றன.
• கோவிந்த நாமத்தின் பல மகத்துவங்களில் முக்கியமான ஒன்று என்னவென்றால் கோவிந்தா என்ற நாமம் திருமாலின் தசாவதாரங்களையும் குறிக்க வல்லது.   கோவிந்தாவில் வரும், கோ என்ற சப்தத்திற்கு வடமொழியில் பற்பல பொருள்கள் உண்டு.

  • பசு மாடு, கன்றுகுட்டிகள்

  • மோட்ஷம்  அளிப்பவர்

  • பர்வதம் அல்லது  மலை
  • துதிக்கும் அல்லது துதிக்கப்படுவர் 
  • புலன்கள். புலன்களை அடக்கி ஆள்பவன்
  • வேதமோதுவதால் அடையக்கூடியவர்
  • கூப்பிடுதூரத்தில் இருப்பவர்.

• மச்சாவதாரம்: திருமால் எடுத்த முதல் அவதாரம் மச்சாவதாரம். மச்சம் என்றால் மீன் என்று பொருள். மச்ச அவதாரத்தில் நீரில் இருந்து வேதங்களை காப்பாற்றியதால் கோவிந்தா என்று அந்த அவதாரத்தை குறிப்பிடலாம்.  
• தேவர்களும் அசுரர்களும் பாற்கடலைக் கடைந்த போது மந்திரமலையைத் தாங்க திருமால் எடுத்த ஆமை அவதாரம் கூர்மாவதாரம்.    கூர்ம அவதாரத்தில் மந்திர மலையை தாங்கியபடி பாற்கடலில் பள்ளி கொண்டதால் கோவிந்தா என்று கூறலாம். 
• திருமால் வெள்ளை வராகமாக (பன்றியாக) உருவெடுத்து அசுரனைக் கொன்றதோடு, அப்பூமியைத் தன் கொம்பில் தாங்கிக் கொண்டு அருள் செய்தார்.    நீரில் இருந்து பூமியை காப்பாற்றியதால்  அந்த அவதாரத்தையும் கோவிந்தா என்றே அழைக்கலாம். 
• பிரகலாதனுக்காக தூணில் திருமால் சிங்கவடிவத்தில் வெளிப்பட்டு அரக்கனைக் கொன்றார்.   பிரஹலாதனுக்கு மோட்ஷம் அளித்தார்.  அதே போல் சகல தேவதைகளும் நரசிம்ஹருக்கு கோபம் தணிய ஸ்தோத்திரம்   செய்தார்கள் அல்லது துதித்தார்கள்.   ஆகவே  அந்த அவதாரமும் கோவிந்தா  எனக்கொள்ளலாம்.
• பிரகலாதனின் பேரன் மகாபலியின் ஆணவத்தை அடக்க பெருமாள் எடுத்த குள்ள வடிவம் வாமன அவதாரம். தன் அடியில் மூவுலகங்களையும் அளந்து திருவிக்ரமனாக வானுக்கும் மண்ணுக்கும் உயர்ந்து நின்றார்.   பூமியை அளந்ததால் கோவிந்தா என்பர்.
• தந்தை வாக்கை சிரமேல் கொண்டு செயல் பட்ட பரசுராம அவதாரத்தையும் கோவிந்தா என்றே கூறலாம்.
• ரகுகுலத்தில் தசரத சக்கரவர்த்திக்கு மகனாகத் திருமால் எடுத்த அவதாரம் ராமன். தந்தை கொடுத்த சத்தியத்தைக் காப்பாற்றியதும், விச்வாமிதிரரிடம் இருந்து ஐநூறுக்கும் மேலான ஆயுதங்களைப் பெற்றதாலும்,   அகத்திய முனிவரிடம் இருந்து பற்பல அஸ்திரங்களை பெற்றதால் ஸ்ரீ ராமனையும் கோவிந்தா என்றே கொள்ளலாம்.
• கோகுலத்தில் விஷ்ணுவின் அம்சமாக வசுதேவருக்குப் பிறந்த பிள்ளை பலராமன். பெருமாள். பலராமரின் ஆயுதம் கலப்பை  – அதனை கொண்டு பூமியை தோண்டுவதால் பலராமரும் கோவிந்தரே.
• வசுதேவருக்கும் தேவகிக்கும் குழந்தையாக மகாவிஷ்ணு எடுத்த அவதாரம் கிருஷ்ணாவதாரம்.   மாடு கன்றுகளுடன் கூடிய ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணரை கோவிந்தா என்றே கூப்பிடுவோம். கோவர்த்தன மலையை தாங்கி பசுக்களையும் மக்களையும் காப்பாற்றியதால்  கோவிந்தன் ஆகிறார்.
• கலி  யுகத்தின் முடிவில் திருமால் எடுக்கும் அவதாரம் கல்கி.  உலகை அழித்து, நம்மை முக்தி நிலைக்கு கொண்டு செல்ல வருவார் என்பது சனாதன தர்மத்தின் நம்பிக்கை.  முக்திக்கு அழைத்து செல்வதாலும், பூமியில் தர்மத்தை நிலை நிறுத்துவதாலும் கல்கி அவதாரமும் கோவிந்தனே.

இதே போல் விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமத்தில் வரும் முதல் திருநாமமான விஸ்வம் என்பதற்கும் திருமாலின் பத்து அவதாரங்களையும் பொருள் கூற முடியும்.

விஷ்ணுவின் திருநாமம்களின் பெருமைகளை போலவே அவரது திவ்ய ஆயுதங்களின் சிறப்புக்களையும் நாம் தெரிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டியது அவசியம்.  அவற்றில் சிலவற்றை இங்கே காணலாம்.

Govinda Namam

In one of our previous weblogs, we have seen the glories of one of the names of Sri Maha Vishnu or Paramathma, namely, Achuthan.   In this weblog, we will try to go through the glories of another name of Sri Vishnu, called, Govinda.

• Even though Sri Mahavishnu has more than one thousand names, Five Important names of Mahavishnu, called Panja Naamaakal are very significant.  They are Rama, Krishna, Govinda, Narayana and Narasimha.   In this group, Govinda stands in the middle, like a center piece of a garland.
• When people climb the Hill, Thiruvengadam, they keep chanting the name of the God, as Govinda Govinda.
• In the Holy Divya Prabantham, there is a section of Hymns called Thirupaavai, composed by Sri Aandal.   She refers Sri Vishnu in this composition many times using different names and in particular, Govinda name has been repeated three times in hymns 27, 28 and 29.

• In the epic, Mahabharatham, one of the important female characters, namely, Panchali or Draupadi, when she was in trouble, she asked for help from Sri Krishna or Vishnu, callingout the name “Govinda“.   So the name Govinda is used for totally surrendering herself to Sri Krishna and more importantly she got His blessings and help in the most difficult situation when she pleaded for help using Govinda.  Sri Vishnu or Sri Krishna had helped her by giving her a saree of infinite length.  “Aabathiley pudavai suranthathu Govinda Naamamere“
• Aachmanam is a short hindu ritual which is done in about 30 seconds, in almost all hindu functions and in many cases it is repeated more than once. In this Aachamanam, twelve names of Sri Mahavishnu are chanted once after starting with Achutha, Anantha and Govinda. Among the twelves names, the name Govinda also appears, which means that whenever we perform Aachmanam, the name Govinda is chanted twice and no other name takes that honour.
• During many of the hindu religious discourses and bajans, people chant “Sarvathra Govinda naama sangeerthanam Govinda, Govinda” and this is quite popular.
• “Baja Govindham” is a popular composition by one of the most significant Acharyas in the Hindu Religion,  Sri Adi Sankarar.   The guru of  Adi Sankarar was also a person by name “Govindar”.   The glories associated with the name Govinda had made him use the Govinda Nama in his compositon as the name of the God.
• Govinda Namam comes twice in Vishnu Sahasranamam, once as 189th Nama (Govindho Govithaam pathigi) and again at 543 (Mahaa varaaghaa, govindaga).
• Among the many different salient points on the Govinda Naamam, the most significant one is that the name Govinda can be attributed to each and every Incarnation of the famous Dasaavathaaram (Ten Incarnations) of Sri Mahavishnu. Let us see how.  The word Govinda can be split as “Go” and “Vindhaa” in Sanskrit.   The word “GO”in sanskrit can mean many things and some of them are :
  • Promise
  • Lives (GO) and Protector (Vintha)
  • Cow and Baby Cows
  • Earth
  • Capable of giving Moksha
  • Water
  • Weapon
  • Mountain
  • can be praised
  • can control the limbs
  • can be reached by chanting veda
  • available in closer proximity
• Machaavathaaram (Fish Incarnation) – This  is the first of the ten incarnations and in this incarnation, Mahavishnu had taken the shape of a fish.   Since He had saved the vedas from water, He can be referred to as Govinda in this incarnation.
• In the second Incarnation, Koorma Avatar, Sri Mahavishnu took the form of a Tortoise to carry a mountain by name, Manthra, when the good and bad from the Celestial world, (Devas and Asuras) churned the  milky ocean to get the Amirtham, the antidote to live for ever.   Since He was the base or axis for the mountain, in this  incarnation, He can very well be called as Govinda.
• Hiranyatchagan, a demon, took the world and hid it under the sea.   Paramathma or Perumaal appeared as White wild boar (Varahavathaarm), the third Incarnation, killed the demon and held the world (earth) using His horn.  Since Varahan, or Mahavishnu recovered the earth from the sea water, we can address Varahan as Govindan.
• In the fourth incarnation, Paramathma or Perumal came out of a pillar to kill the demon for protecting Prahaladan.    He also gave Moksham or the eternal world to Prahaladan.    When He was angry after killing the demon, Hiranyakasipu, all the good from the celestial world, Brahma, Rudran, Indran and Sri Mahalakshmi came down and started pacifying Him by rendering prayers and praising Him.   Since He was praised by all and also He gave the eternal world to Prahaladan in this incarnation, He can be greeted as Govinda. 
• The grandson of Prahaldan was Mahabali and to tame him, Perumal or Paramathma took the fifth incarnation, Vamana Avatharam.    The short Vamanan grew into huge Vikraman and He conquered not only this world, but also the whole universe, with two giant strides.    Since He conquered and measured this world using his first step, Vamanan or Thirivikraman can be hailed as Govindan.
• In the sixth incarnation of Paramathma, Parasuraman, has taken each and every word of His father seriously and carried out the orders meticulously.   Since He has fulfilled all the promises made to His father, Parasurama can also be greeted as Govinda.
• In the seventh incarnation, Sri Rama was born in Raghu Dynasty to the King Dasaratha .   Here also He fulfilled the promises given to Dasaratha.   In addition, He had obtained more than five hundred weapons from the saint Vishwamithrar. Similarly He had also obtained several weapons from the  saint Agathiyar.  For all these reasons, Rama can be complimented as Govinda.
• Balaraman, the eight incarnation, is born to Vasudevar in Gokulam.  His weapon is Plough , which is used for cutting, lifting, turning over, and partly pulverizing soil in the earth. So He can also be admired as Govinda. 
• The ninth incarnation, Sri Krishna, was born to Vasudevar and Devaki.  In His younger days, He had always been associated with cow and calf.   He had carried the mountain Govardana with His hand to protect the Cow, calf and the people of Brindavan and hence Sri Krishna can also celebrated as Govindan.
• At the end of Kali Yugam, Paramathma will take an incarnation, called Kalki.   At that time, He will help in terms of establishing good governance in this world and He would help people to reach the eternal world.  Hence He will also be endorsed as Govinda.   

In the same way, the first name in Vishnu Sahasranaamam, namely, Vishwam, can be also be interpreted to stand for all the ten incarnations of Sri Maha Vishnu.
