============================================
As we mentioned earlier, Swami Namazhwaar composed four Prabanthams, namely, Thiru Virutham, Thiruvaasiriyam, Thiruvaimozhi and Periya Thiruvandhaadhi. These are considered parallel to the four Vedhams, the rule book of life in Sanskrit, namely, Rig, Yajur, Saama and Atharvana.
In Kovilozhugu, a book containing historical and religious information on important temples, from very early days, there is a hymn highlighting the greatness of Namazhwaar and his compositions, as below.
EE aaduvatho garudarkku ethire, iraviku ethir minmini aaduvatho, Naai aduvatho urmipuliku mun, nari kesari mun nadai aaduvatho, pei aaduvatho azhghu Urvasiku mun, perumaanadi ser Vaghulaabharanan gyayiru maamarain thamazhin innoru sol perumo ulagil kaviye.
The meaning of the above hymn is talking about number of comparisons, like, Fly with Eagle, Fireflies with Sun, Dog with Tiger, the walk of Fox with that of a Lion, the dance of Devil with that of Urvasi, a beautiful dancer in heaven. Similarly it is impossible to compare any tamil word to the words used by Swami Namazhwaar, in his hymns.
Swami Namazhwaar started his request (“en vinnappame“) with “Poi Nindra Gnanamum, polla ozhukkum, azhuku udambum” in his Thiruvirutham. Then he moved on to Thiruvasiriyam with “Sekkar Maa mugiluduthu mikka senjudar parithi soodi, amchudar mathiyam poondu“. Then he proceeded as “muyatri sumanthu ezhunthu munthutra nenje” in Periya Thiruvandhaadhi. In Thiruvaimozhi, he started with “Uyarvara Uyar Nalam udaiyavan evan avan“.
There are totally 1102 hymns in Thiruvaimozhi, 100 hymns in Thiruvirutham, 7 hymns in Thiruvaasiriyam and 87 hymns in Periya Thiruvandhaadhi.
As a beginning, let us start with the structure of Thiruvaimozhi and some of the special glories that go with Thiruvaimozhi in this weblog. I feel like a very tiny insect trying to cross a great ocean, when I start writing about Thiruvaimozhi, as I can only attempt a very small portion of the very many interesting and important aspects of this great Thiruvaimozhi. It also has a special name called Bhagavath Vishayam. So if the readers are able to know more about Thiruvaimozhi either from this weblog or from other sources, it is my pleasure.
All the 1102 hymns of Thiruvaimozhi are divided into ten (10) Tens, called “Pathu” and each “Pathu” is further divided into 10 sub sections called “Pathigams”. All pathigams will have 11 hymns, except the 7th Pathigam in the 2nd Ten, where there are two additional hymns. Within each Pathigam, Swami Nammazhwaar has used the last hymn for explaining the benefits to us, the people who read, recite and understand the pathigam, generally called “phalasruthi” and the remaining initial paasurams are used to explain the concept of the pathigam. So all Pathigams will have 11 hymns, except for the 7th Pathigam of 2nd Pathu, which has 13 hymns.
On this special 7th Pathigam of 2nd Pathu, Azhvaar talks about the significant twelve names of Sri Vishnu and their glories. Azhwaar has allocated one hymn per name and hence there are thirteen hymns in this pathigam, Including the last hymn, which is the usual Phalasruthi, In this pathigam, another speciality is that each hymn will have two names of Sri Vishnu, once at the beginning and once at the end of the hymn.
As per Tamil language literature, Thiruvaimozhi is classified under a group called “Andhadhi”. If the last word of the hymn is same as the first word of the subsequent hymn, then it is called “Andhadhi”, in general, and more specifically it is called “Word-related-Andhathi”. Similarly if the last word of the last hymn is same as the first word of the first hymn, like completing a cycle, then it is called “Mandala Andhadhi”.
For Thiruvaimozhi, five renowned personalities have written traditional explanatory notes and even today they are used as reference material for Thiruvaimozhi. These notes are written in a special manner, called, Manipravalam, that is by combining both Tamil and Sanskrit words. Thiruvaimozhi can be seen as a summarised version of Vedham and as a repository of philosophical thoughts. The above explanatory notes bring out these philosophical thoughts in an explicit manner. The explanatory notes, not only give the exact meaning of the hymns, but also ask related questions and provide explanation for those questions. This gives an extraordinary opportunity for us to learn from multiple perspectives. Similarly these traditional notes also give the continuity in the meaning from one hymn to the other, one Pathigam to the next and from one Pathu to the next. This type of continuity helps us to classify Thiruvaimozhi as Meaning-related-Andhadhi.
Thus, Thiruvaimozhi can be classified as Word-related-Andhadhi, Meaning-related-Andhathi and also Mandala Anthadhi.
The 5 explanatory works on Thiruvaimozhi are as follows
The great Tamil poet, Kambar has also written about Swami Nammazhwaar, in his composition called “Sadagopar anthathi”. He praises both Nammazhwaar and his composition, namely, Thiruvaimozhi. He says that the best laurel, which Lord Sri Vishnu has got is Thiruvaimozhi itself from Swami Nammazhwaar. He has lauded Thiruvaimozhi as “Aaraa Amutha Kavi Aaayiram”, meaning 1000 hymns of tasteful hymns.
Thiruvaimozhi is called “The Dravida Vedham”. Even today there is a practice that Thiruvaimozhi is not recited in the streets, instead they are recited only in front Perumal inside the temple, so that He can enjoy Thiruvaimozhi. This is due to the importance and significance given to Thiruvaimozhi, by Perumal Himself.
Artha Panchakam, is five basic truths every Sri Vaishnava should know and they are
To attain moksha, we first need to know the nature of the Jeevathmaa, the nature of the Paramathmaa, what goal the Jeevathmaa should aspire for, how to attain this goal, and what keeps Jeevathmaas from attaining this goal. Sri Vaishnava philosophy refers to these five points as artha panchakam.
One of the Aacharyaars, Parasura Bhattar, had condensed this into a short hymn :
“Mikka irai nilaiyum, meiyaam uyir nilaiyum, thakka neriyum thadaiyaagi thokkiyalum, oozhvinaiyum, vazhvinaiyum odhum kurukaikone yazhin isai vethathu iyal“
Our aacharyaars strongly suggest that Swami Namazhwaar’s Thiruvaimozhi explains the above Artha Panchakam in great detail.
According to one of the aacharyaars, Vathikesari Azhagiya Manavaala Jeeyar, in the introduction of his explanatory notes for Thiruvaimozhi called Panneeraayirapadi (12000 word count) mentions that :
Another Achaaryaar, Azhagiya Manavaala Perumaal Nayanaar, takes 20 different pathigams from Thiruvaimozhi and explains how these 20 pathigams represent Artha Panchakam. Table given below are the pathigams for each of the elements of Artha Panchakam :
Another important element for Sri Vaishnavaas is the Dwaya Maha Manthiram. From the various Traditional Explanatory Notes, mentioned above, we can see that Thiruvaimozhi describes the Dwaya Maha Manthiram, which starts as “Sriman Narayana Saranam “ and ending with “Srimathe Naaryananaya Namaha”.
Please note that whatever given above are only a subset of many interesting facts about Thiruvaimozhi, which I could understand. We will look into the high level details on the Ten Tens in our next weblog.
