In the previous posts on Kulasekara Azhwar’s Perumal Thirumozhi, we had a brief account of seven subsections. Azhwaar, whose birth is denoted by his immense devotion towards Sri Ramachandramoorthi and His devotees, sings about Srirangam, in his first three subsections, Thiruvengadam in his fourth subsection and Thiruvithuvakkodu, Malayala Divyadesam or the Divya Desam in Kerala in his fifth subsection.
In the first five subsections, Azhwaar experiences the glories of the Paramathmaa in the form of Archai In the subsequent subsections, Azhwaar talks, in his own style, about the glories of Paramathmaa in another form, namely, Vibhavaavathaaram. In the sixth subsection, Azhwaar takes the roles of the Gopikas, the women folk of Brindavan, who lived at the same time of Sri Krishna and loved Sri Krishna. In the seventh subsection, Azhwaar takes the role of Devaki, who is also accorded the title Deiva Devaki, by Kulasekara Azhwaar, (Holy Devaki), the mother who gave birth to Sri Krishna, who lost all the opportunities to be with and enjoy the playful acts of Sri Krishna at His young age.
In the next subsection, namely, the eighth, Azhwaar, enjoys the happy moments of Kowsalya, mother of Sri Rama, at His young age. All the eleven hymns of this subsection are dedicated to Sri Sowri Raja Perumal, the chief deity of Thirukannapuram, whom azhwaar calls as “kandavar tham manam vazhangum kannapurathu en karu maniye“. In the ninth subsection, Azhwaar brings out the sadness of Dasarathan, father of Sri Rama, after he was separated from Sri Rama, who went to the forest. Kula Sekara Azhwaar takes the role of Dasarathan, and Azhwaar brings out the feelings of Dasarathan in the hymns as they melt our hearts and these are called as Dasarathan’s lamentations.
Kulasekara Azhwaar through his deep love, affection and devotion to Sri Rama, has compiled three subsections on Sri Rama and Sri Ramayanam. Earlier, we had seen Rama’s mother, Kowsalya happily singing her lullaby on the young Rama, in the eighth subsection. In the ninth subsection, Azhwaar talks about the lamentations of Dasaratha, His father. In the next subsection, or the final subsection of Perumal Thirumozhi, Azhwaar brings out the whole Ramayanam. Azhwaar takes the divya desam, Thillai Nagar Thiru Chitra Koodam (Now called as Chidambaram Govindaraja Perumal Koil) as the part of this subsection.
After Darasaratha’s lamentations, Azhwaar decided to bring out the entire Ramayanam in the final subsection of Perumaal Thirumozhi. The entire Ramayanam, consisting of about 24000 slokas in Valmiki Ramayanam and 10,000 poems in Kamba Ramayanam, was beautifully narrated in just 11 verses by Azhwaar.
Sri Rama and Sita spent some wonderful years in Chitra Koodam, which is in Northern India, out of their fourteen years of forest life. When Azhwaar had dharsan of the deity, Sri Govindarajar in Chidambaram, Azhwaar experienced the presence of Sri Rama, Sita, Lakshmana of Chitra Koodam, but in Chidambaram. Hence he called this divya desam as Thillainagar Thiru Chitra Koodam.
In the first hymn, Azhwaar brings out the beauty of Ayodhya and Sri Rama. He has also showers all praises on Sri Rama, by calling Him as the Shining Light for the whole Soorya Clan . Azhwaar completes the hymn by expressing his desire to have the dharsan of Sri Rama, who is now present in Thillai Nagar Thiru Chitra Koodam, Chidambaram in Tamilnadu.
Azhwaar, in the first subsection of this Perumal Thirumozhi, longed when he would have the opportunity to have the dharsan of Ranganatha Perumal, by saying “Karumaniyai, Komalathai, kandu kondu, en kanninai endru kolo kallikum naale“. In the same manner he starts his last subsection of Perumal Thirumozhi by longing to have the dharsan of Sri Govindarajan Perumal, by saying “Engal thani Muthalvanai, em Peruman Thannai, endru kolo kann kulira kaannum naale“.
In this hymn, Azhwaar starts saluting the Lord for His prowess by mentioning “Vinn muzhthum uyyak konda veeran thanai“, meaning Lord Rama gave abode all in the celestial world.
In the second hymn, Azhwaar explains the prowess of Sri Rama, by highlighting
In the same hymn, Azhwaar also mentions another virtue of Sri Rama, that He always protects the people, by saying that by removing these demons from the scene, He had helped the Sage Vishwamithra to complete his yagya .
In one way, we can take the reason for Sri Rama to force Maareechan to run away , instead of killing him, could be because, then only, Maareechan would be able to explain the prowess of Sri Rama to Ravanan at a later date. Our acharyas also use the example of Subhaahu and Maareechan to explain an important fact that is given in Upanishadh, Brahmma Suthram and Aandaal’s Thiruppaavai. It is a favour, Paramathma does to us, when we pray for the total surrender. He removes all our sins of the past lives, (prarabdha karma) and all the sins we committed during this life (samchita karma), like the way He killed Subhaahu and He clears all the sins that we might be committing during the rest of our life, (Agami Karma), like how He drove away Maareechan. The same point is told by Aandal in her Thiruppavai, as “poya pizhaiyum pughu tharuvaan nindranavum, theeyinil thoosaagum” (5)
Azhwaar completes the hymn, by saying that the same Paramathma, adorning the gem-filled throne, is in Thillai Nagar Thiru Chitra Koodam, where 3000 Brahmins praised the glory of the deity.
Azhwaar’s devotion towards devotees comes out vividly in the Third Hymn of this subsection. In this hymn, Azhwaar talks about the marriage with Sita by breaking the the special bow from Siva (Siva Dhansu) and the subduing of Parasuraama by breaking his stronger bow. Azhwaar says that similar brave Rama, with strong arms and a heavy bow resides in Tillainagar Tiruchitrakutam. Azhwaar concludes the hymn by saying that he would for ever be a servant to those devotees of this Thillainagar Thiruchitrakooda Rama. In Ramayanam, Rama’s brother Bharathan had always served only Rama . Their brother Chathrugnan had only served Bharatha. Azhwaar winds up this hymn, by saying that he wished to be like Chathrugnan and serve all the devotees of Sri Rama.
Fourth hymn is a very interesting hymn, where Azhwaar talks about
In this fourth hymn, there are some interesting, beautiful and enjoyable words which are coined by Azhwaar, and let us see some of them.
In the next hymn, Azhwaar talks about the way Rama went about to do the following :
Like the previous hymn, there are some interesting, beautiful and enjoyable words which are coined by Azhwaar in this hymn also and let us see some of them.
Aanai Aayiram, Ther Pathinaayiram, adal pari oru kodi; senai kaavalar aayiram padin, kavantham ondru enzhunthu aadum; kaanam, aayiram kavanthu nindru aadidin, kavin mani kannil ennum; enai am mani ezharai nazhigai aadiyathu inithu andre – 9513
When Rama killed 1000 elephants, 10000 chariots and 10 million soldiers, one trunk (body without head) would stand up and dance. When 1000 such trunks danced, the bell in the bow of Sri Rama would strike once. On that day, when the war was going on, the bow was continuously ringing for hours.
With this prowess of Sri Rama, let us conclude this weblog and continue the remaining hymns in our next weblog.
They lyrics of the tenth subsection can be seen at the following web address and we take this opportunity to express our thanks to them.
